JOB DESCRIPTION

Your responsibilities

The CERN Experimental Physics Department has a strategic R&D programme focused on technologies for future experiments. This initiative encompasses detector mechanics, electronics, software, and magnets for new experiments and upgrades in High Energy Physics beyond LHC phase II. In this framework, the work package related to Mechanics addresses the challenges of developing completely new detector designs based on advanced structural and thermal materials, supported by robotic systems for their installation and maintenance.

Key Challenges:

  • Low Mass Mechanics: Developing support and thermal management systems for sensors to meet stringent material budget requirements in the innermost layers, while providing large surface coverage in the outermost layers.

  • Integrated Cooling: Designing solutions to dissipate heat generated by readout sensors and other electronic components, and extending the service life of sensors in radiation environments. Integrated cooling will drive the structural design criteria.

As a Mechanical Engineer in the CERN EP R&D team, you will:

  • Design air cooling solutions for Vertex and tracker detectors.

  • Integrate new modular fluid cooling substrates and their interconnectivity.
  • Manage mechanics and cooling for Vertex inside the primary vacuum system.
  • Develop prototypes and conduct system and component-level characterization tests for integrated mechanics and cooling.

  • Demonstrated experience in the design of mechanical and cooling systems. A good understanding of tracking detector mechanics and data acquisition system would be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of CAD software for 3D modelling (ideally Catia V5) and the production of 2D technical drawings according to the relevant standards for dimensioning and tolerances (e.g. ISO Geometrical Product Specifications).

  • Proven experience in fluid mechanics analysis (CFD). Experience with ANSYS and Matlab would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in thermal and mechanical testing is essential, including ability to writing procedure and test reports. Knowledge of Labview would be an advantage.
  • Rigorous and organized approach to work, producing quality results at first attempt.
  • Work well in teams.
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.
