JOB DESCRIPTION

The UN Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Communication Division communicates UNEP’s core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide.

UNEP has an exciting portfolio of campaigns and communication projects that we want to take out to a younger audience. These include overseeing and driving the youth and education outreach for World Environment Day, Young Champions of the Earth, and flagship campaigns, such as the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (#GenerationRestoration), #BeatPollutions, among others, and work to support delivery of the Climate, Nature and Pollution Action pillars. The objective of this UNV assignment is to lend expertise to youth communication and engagement strategies to UNEP’s campaigns and activities, with a particular focus on Young Champions of the Earth, and other youth-focused activities.

  1. Develop, implement, and evaluate youth-related programmes, i.e., Young Champions of the Earth.
  2. Monitor and analyze Programme development and implementation; review relevant documents and reports.
  3. Identify problems and issues to be addressed and propose corrective actions.
  4. Identify and track follow-up actions; liaise with relevant parties – in close collaboration with and following guidance of thematic campaign leads.
  5. Use expertise and networks for outreach and communication strategies for programmes and initiatives.
  6. Integrate youth-related activities and components across campaign workstreams in collaboration with other parts of UNEP, especially for key events and campaigns such as World Environment Day and UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
  7. Guide implementation of the communication plans concerning youth engagement and participation, ensuring key deliverables are met and proactive and reactive opportunities are being maximized.
  8. Maintain relations with current and potential partners in support of communication programmes, campaigns, and initiatives, especially those pertaining to youth engagement, including keeping the changemakers network vibrant and fully activated.
  9. Lend expertise as focal point on youth-related issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc.
  10. Prepare various written outputs, e.g., draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, briefing notes, talking points, etc.
  11. Provide substantive inputs around youth engagement and participation in consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc.,
  12. Produce agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, among others.

education, youth, or environment, or other relevant programmes; a professional work experience at the national and/or international level.
• Experience with youth engagement for environmental issues on a global level is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;
• Excellent computer skills (Microsoft office, email, internet) are required;
• Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
• Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
• Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels;
• Familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
• Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment;

• Have affinity with or interest in youth, and environmental sustainability, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
