For the Bioeconomy workstream, all services to be delivered under these Terms of Reference will have a direct impact on the development, implementation and mainstreaming of the Bioeconomy plan in Brazil. For the Early Action Support project, two knowledge management products targeting global audiences in the Ministries of Environments and CBD focal points in the countries will be developed in collaboration with the TEN unit and national consultants

Duties and Responsibilities
Organization Setting: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. It is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The current position is to support several areas of work that UNEP is supporting: (1) technical support to countries in the revision of their NBSAPs; and (2) a plan for bioeconomy. The Ministry of Environment has requested the support of the UNEP Brazil office and the Biodiversity and Land Branch in the Ecosystems Division to develop the national bioeconomy plan. This is embedded in the interagency High Impact Initiative and is aligned with the Ministry of Finance Ecological transition plan. Several agencies at the country level will be engaged in responding to this demand, hence the Common Approach. UNEP will help coordinate the consultation workshops with other government sectors. The Communication Specialist will work in close collaboration with other members of the Economics of Nature Unit (TEN), the UNEP Brazil country office, and Brazil office team. This post will be home based. The Communication Specialist shall work under the guidance and overall supervision of the Head, Economics of Nature Unit (TEN). 1. Duties and Responsibilities: This consultancy will contribute to UNEP’s Common Approach to Biodiversity in the context of implementing the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. Specifically on the Biodiversity Economy driving economic transformation, and it will include activities related to (i) Supporting Brazil to adopt their national bioeconomy policy, to (ii) Scaling bioeconomy impact through regional platforms & G20 initiatives, and to (iii) Contributing to the development of a payment for ecosystem services guidelines to be adopted by the G20. For the Bioeconomy workstream, responsibilities of the communication specialist will include, but are not limited to: 1. Develop, curate, and manage content across various platforms including social media, websites, newsletters, PowerPoint presentations, reports, op-eds, and educational materials to promote bioeconomy initiatives as demanded. 2. Develop, revise and create background documents for the G20 meetings as demanded by the Unit. 3. Assist in planning and organizing events, workshops, and webinars to disseminate information (invitations, registration, live transmission, transcription, presentation, press releases, news articles, op-eds, social media cards, etc) 4. Coordinate the stakeholder engagement to ensure alignment and collaboration as needed. As part of UNEP’s work on the Early Action Support project, this consultancy will compile the lessons learned and the successful approaches towards the inclusion of environmental economic accounting in the GBF monitoring framework in order to support countries in their development of their NBSAPs. It will also focus on compiling successful approaches towards policy mainstreaming for GBF.
Qualifications/special skills
A first level degree in communication, journalism, design, environmental studies, or related areas is required. An advanced degree in communication, journalism, or related areas would be an added advantage. A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in communication to decision-makers in the government and private sector, and the broader public at national and international levels is required. Experience working with social media and digital tools is desirable
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written Portuguese and English is required.
