Job Description

Queensland has the highest remand rates in Australia and 54 reasons’ youth support services are focused on turning this statistic around. We need you to work closely with young people involved with the youth justice system to take the steps to become the best they can be, through practical support, case management and advocacy.

54 reasons is Australia’s leading child rights organisation – no ordinary not-for-profit.

A place where your purpose matters. Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we’re here to make sure that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

With the child’s voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers, advocating with them so that children develop, learn, and are connected, safe and confident. Our people are proudly local, reflective of the communities we serve – in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities.

It takes all types of personalities and talents to drive our organisation– yours included. We value a healthy work-life balance and ensure our people feel connected to each other and our impact. Learn from inspiring people and grow from a connection to our strong local and global networks. From our programs to our support services – this is the place to realise your purpose.

A place to make a difference:

In this full-time, permanent role based in Mount Isa, you’ll be empowered to make a difference in young people’s lives by learning, sharing and collaborating to find new ways to solve problems.

You will make a difference by:

  • Providing support to young people who are not supported by protective factors (families, friends, communities, school, and cultural connections) to enable them to lead safe, healthy, and active lives
  • Supporting young people who are entering, or already involved in, the Youth Justice System, including those who are exiting detention or under youth justice supervision
  • Providing a culturally responsive service by embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into the design, delivery and evaluation of your programs and services
  • Providing young people with case management support that is collaborative, coordinated and client-centred, supporting young people to meet their individual needs and to increase their self-reliance and independence
  • Monitoring and evaluation of program outcomes

A place to feel valued:

You’re an experienced professional, who has a passion for assisting young people on bail to reach their full potential by ensuring their voice is central to goal setting and redirecting them from the Youth Justice system. We recognise your contribution and provide you the support to ensure you can bring your best, knowing here you have the space and opportunity to grow.

Bringing your best every day, means:

  • Demonstrated skills and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, young people disengaged with the school system, young people in contact with the justice system and those who have experienced trauma
  • Demonstrated experience in youth work / case management roles
  • An understanding of complex intergenerational trauma
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • An understanding of child protection concerns and commitment to responding safely and effectively
  • Sound time management and organisational skills, and ability to manage and plan own workload
