JOB DESCRIPTION

IFPRI is seeking an individual consultant to develop a paper using data from the gender norms in Agrifood System (AFS) Pilot Studies conducted in Tanzania and Nigeria.

Background

Under the CGIAR Gender Equality Initiative program on Harnessing Equality for Resilience in the Agrifood System (HER+) Work Package 1 (WP1), IFPRI and partners are developing multidimensional measures of gender norms in Agrifood System (AFS). Development of these measures is part of a larger body of work aimed at reducing normative constraints that limit women’s economic resilience to climate change (CC) challenges. In developing these measures, pilot studies were conducted in Nigeria and Tanzania and included women and men respondents from three commodities/AFS in each country. Based on these pilot data, IFPRI and collaborators have been analyzing these data to develop measures of norms and better understand the specific normative constraints in each country and AFS. In preparation for scaling this work, IFPRI and partners are seeking a consultant to conduct further analysis to better understand how gender norms in AFS differ for and among youth.

Scope of Work

The consultant will lead the development of an IFPRI discussion paper using data from the gender norms in AFS pilot studies conducted in Tanzania and Nigeria. The paper will address the following research questions: 1) How are gender norms in AFS changing across generations? 2) How do these patterns differ by social identity markers, such as gender, ethnicity, household economic status, and education levels?

For the first deliverable (13 days), the consultant will review the literature on youth and gendered social norms to refine the research questions and draft the introduction and background sections of the discussion paper. The consultant will also prepare an outline of the paper and participate in regular meetings with the project team to determine the agreed upon quantitative analyses that suit the final research questions.

For the second (final) deliverable (22 days), the consultant will continue working on the discussion paper and prepare it for submission to the IFPRI discussion paper series. The final deliverable should include agreed upon revisions to the draft sections submitted for the first deliverable; finalized analysis and results presented, including tables when appropriate; and discussion and conclusion sections that addresses the theoretical and practical implications of the study, along with recommendations for future research.

As part of this consultancy, the consultant and IFPRI project team will meet regularly to coordinate contributions to the final product. Specifically, the consultant will lead the introduction/background section, the write-up of the results, and the discussion/conclusion section. IFPRI staff familiar with the dataset will be responsible for leading the methods section of the discussion paper and running the agreed upon quantitative analysis in Stata.

Deliverables:

· Paper outline, draft introduction and background, and preliminary results (13 days)
