OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
To support the translation of materials and official documents from Chinese to other languages and vice versa in a technical and managerial role. To improve the quality of translation and interpretation to enable clear communication with national partners and prompt technical assistance from the WHO Country Office and WHO as a whole.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Administrative Officer at the WR Country Office and in consultation with the WR China and WPRO Chief for Translations, Publications and Library, the position incumbent will support the planning, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of activities to strengthen Translations, Publications and Library Services for WHO in China:
1. Oversee the work of all translators in the WR office and monitor and supervise all requests for translation into Chinese and into English received from WPRO, HQ, National Health Commission and the various technical teams in the office;
2. Compile and update English and Chinese Glossary of Technical Terms;
3. Create and maintain a roster of Chinese translators and revisers; when necessary, identify external translators and complete contractual arrangements; monitor workflows and deadlines; arrange for necessary printing and organise the dispatch of final documents in Chinese;
4. Translate and interpret at meetings, translate documents, report, correspondence and communications on various projects for internal use, such as notifications from the national counterparts, summaries of press articles on public health and other related WHO activities;
5. Clear official speeches and press releases posted in Chinese in the WRO website;
6. Maintain a database of WHO official publications for circulation to the members of the National Committee for Translation Priorities. Liaise with relevant officers at WPRO and HQ to implement the recommendations of the National Committee for Translation Priorities;
7. Coordinate the maintenance of documents and publications in the office central library;
8. Collect information and prepare periodic and ad-hoc reports on programme and project activities as assigned;
9. Organise relevant data and information systems and maintain records, documents and follow–up systems for the monitoring of project/programme implementation, including records in the GSM/ERP system;
10. Organise and participate in meetings of relevant counterparts;
11. Assist in the preparation of reports, project documents and submissions to governments by providing information preparing background material for use in discussions with government and other organisations. Participate in briefing and debriefings of project personnel;
12. Perform other relevant duties as required by the office.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Essential: A university degree in translation and/or interpretation.

Experience
Essential: Minimum one year of translation/interpretation experience in a multi-cultural environment or in another international organization.
Desirable: Experience of translation/interpretation in context of high level government, international organisation or business events or meeting.
Skills
- Thorough knowledge of office procedures and ability to acquire knowledge of WHO procedures, rules and regulations;
- Ability to accurately and rapidly translate documents from English into Chinese and vice versa;
- Ability to analyze and interpret source documentation and data from English into Chinese and vice versa;
- Ability to draft correspondence and prepare documentations and reports concisely and accurately;

REMUNERATION
Remuneration comprises an annual base salary starting at CNY 388,035 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
