Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is a global leader in the fight against drugs, crime, terrorism and corruption. It is a lead provider of specialized assistance to Governments and provides support to reach their targets under the various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It operates in all regions through an extensive network of Field Offices. The Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP) delivers technical assistance in UNODC mandates areas through the Regional Programme and oversees all other offices of UNODC in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Under the direct supervision of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer, the Intern – Criminal Justice provides ensuring high quality, accuracy and consistency of work.The internship is UNPAID and interns work in-person five days per week (full time – 40 hours). Under the overall supervision of the Crime Prevention Criminal Justice Officer, the intern will provide substantive inputs for research and support to the delivery of technical assistance in Southeast Asia and the Pacific region. The intern will be mainly involved in research, monitoring and reporting of programme implementation. Duties will include but not be limited to: • Research, compile, draft and edit basic information needed for the preparation and production of reports and communication materials, including newsletters and website stories; • Support the Criminal Justice team on tasks related to the development and implementation of their technical assistance projects, including assisting in the planning and organization of trainings, meetings and events. • Contributing to data collection, management and analysis related to transnational organised crime, • Assisting assigned supervisors to implement ongoing project activities; • Providing support to the implementation of activities including the organization of, and reporting from, conferences, events, training courses, etc.
Qualifications/special skills
• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). • Be computer literate in standard software applications; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work.experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. • Demonstrable skills in analytical thinking, communication and research. • Strong interest in issues related to transnational organized crime, security, peace, justice, and/or development. • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work under pressure within an international setting. • Specialised knowledge of criminal proceedings (investigations, prosecutions, etc.) and analytical skills are desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
