Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of about 150 Governments (see www.ipbes. net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Under the overall supervision of the co-chairs of the IPBES review panel, the Individual Contractor (IC) will provide technical support to the external review panel conducting a midterm review of the IPBES 2030 rolling work programme: • Support the review of relevant documents and literature; • Support the organization of online and in person interviews and meetings with relevant stakeholders; • Coordinate the preparation of survey questions, support the external review of draft questions, and support the analysis of responses to the external survey; • Support the preparation of a report on the external review for consideration by the Plenary at its twelfth session, including specific recommendations for the further implementation of all six objectives of the 2030 rolling work programme, in line with relevant decisions of and budgets approved by the IPBES Plenary. The report will include recommendations responding to the need to facilitate the full and effective participation of all members, observers, experts and stakeholders, including from developing countries, as well as the need for gender equity in all relevant aspects of the work of IPBES; • Support the organization of a participatory session on the midterm review at the eleventh session of the Plenary; • Support the organization of an in-person meeting of the IPBES review panel; • Support the presentation of the external review report to the Plenary at its twelfth session; • Perform any other task related to the review as assigned by the co-chairs of the review panel; • Coordinate with the Secretariat and Management Committee.
Qualifications/special skills
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in international development, environmental science, social sciences, economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • Minimum 5 years of experience in project or programme management or a related area is required; • Experience in monitoring and evaluation is desirable; • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to write clear, concise drafts in English; • Experience in planning and organizing international events and/or conferences is desirable; • Good organizational and personal management skills, with ability to prioritize work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through are desirable; • Knowledge of IPBES, biodiversity, ecosystem services and environment-related matters will be an advantage; • Experience in working with national or global assessment processes will be an advantage; • Experiences in international biodiversity projects.
