Job Description

At 54 reasons in the Gulf, we seek to create an environment that can help protect and ensure safety for our Aboriginal women and children who are at risk or affected by domestic and family violence. To reduce the effect of domestic violence we need to work with the men who practice domestic and family violence and help them to change their behaviours towards women.

We have listened to Aboriginal elders and recognised leaders from the community who identify a return to culture and the return to traditional family principles and values as the way to change the behaviour of our men. Our aim is to show that family and domestic violence was not and is not cultural. By instilling a sense of pride, honour and tradition we will assist our men to regain cultural identity, in order to build stronger happy families.

54 reasons is Australia’s leading child rights organisation – no ordinary not-for-profit.

A place where your purpose matters. Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we’re here to make sure that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

With the child’s voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers, advocating with them so that children develop, learn, and are connected, safe and confident. Our people are proudly local, reflective of the communities we serve – in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities.

It takes all types of personalities and talents to drive our organisation– yours included. We value a healthy work-life balance and ensure our people feel connected to each other and our impact. Learn from inspiring people and grow from a connection to our strong local and global networks. From our programs to our support services – this is the place to realise your purpose.

A place to make a difference:

In this full time, permanent role, which involves travel across Mornington Island, Doomadgee, and Normanton, you’ll work with men who use violence in their relationships, through both individual and group programs in accordance with the Domestic and Family Violence Services: Practice principles, standards and guidance. You’ll also provide Court based information for men (respondents) at the Mornington Island, Doomadgee, and Normanton courts on days when DFV matters are heard. Prioritisation of victims / survivors and their children’s safety is the core function of this service.

You will make a difference by:

  • Creating and using culturally appropriate tools to engage participants with the program
  • Ensuring that the whole family is engaged and supported
  • Promoting healing and wellbeing within the individual and the community
  • Creating and using effective referral pathways

A place to feel valued:

You have a desire to make a positive local impact through your knowledge and understanding of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. You hold strong connections throughout the community and understand the ongoing recurring issues. Your awareness of the other services available in the community will help you be flexible in your approach to truly provide healing and wellbeing to the participants and the wider community. You might also be looking to develop your skills through formalised qualifications.

This role requires:

  • Demonstrated ability to promote healing and wellbeing within individuals
  • Understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and their place in community
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Current valid driver’s licence
  • Working with Children Check / Blue Card (or ability to obtain one)
  • Strong computer literacy

We strongly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants to apply.
