Terms of Reference

As proposed by the Global Compact on Refugees and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDG), UNHCR (United Nations Refugee Agency) seeks to provide protection and find durable solutions for refugees and asylum seekers:
• Through our partners, we provide accommodation, legal guidance and psychosocial assistance in Santiago, Iquique and Arica.
• We carry out periodic protection monitoring to identify the risks, priority needs and integration challenges faced by the refugee and asylum-seeking population in Chile.
• We support protection networks in border areas with Bolivia and Peru, to identify people in need of international protection, prevent their return and support them with the timely delivery of humanitarian assistance.
• We provide technical assistance to national authorities to strengthen legal protection frameworks.
• We promote the adoption of a law that protects stateless persons and the establishment of a procedure for the recognition of stateless status.
• We work with communities to support their initiatives, strengthen their potential and build capacity in the area.
• We develop communication campaigns, work with the media and manage community activities to promote friendly hosting environments.
• Through the #CiudadesSolidarias program, we work with municipalities throughout Chile to facilitate the reception and integration of refugees in their territories.
• We work with the private sector on projects to improve employment opportunities for refugees, as part of the livelihood strategy developed by UNHCR.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE INTERN:
The intern in the Protection Unit will mainly perform the following functions:
• Participate in the management of protection cases by providing care, registration, referral and follow-up of cases, in coordination with UNHCR partner agencies;
• Develop, systematize and update information aimed at refugees and asylum seekers in Chile about their rights, relevant procedures and available protection services;
• Support the execution of direct implementation funds from the Protection and Durable Solutions unit, specifically in administrative processes for payment to suppliers and reporting of results;
• Prepare and draft documents developed by the protection unit;
• Other tasks as required by the unit.
