OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The mission of UNOHSM is to provide global UN system-wide activities to promote healthy and safe work environment, to prevent service incurred diseases, injuries and incidents and to protect and promote health,safety and wellbeing of UN personnel wherever they may be, taking account oftheir individual health status, working conditions and job demands.The Mechanism is managedby a UN-wide Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Coordinator, supported by an Interagency OHS Committee and a leanSecretariat, which is managed by the incumbent. The objective of UNOHSM is tosupport the UN system’s entities in fulfilling their obligations to providehealthy and safe work environment and to continually protect the health,safety, and well-being of UN personnel by providing advice and support toentity OHS services and aligning OHS policies and practices across the UNsystem. More specifically, UNOHSM will seek to: coordinate and align the approaches taken by each UN entity OHS services and support their OHS management system and programmes to develop and update OHS policies with the appropriate level of expertise and authority and translate them into action, while enhancing coherence and harmonization across entities; provide guidance and assistance to the OHS management frameworks and structures of UN entities in addressing most common occupational hazards in a coherent way using evidence based, quality controlled and integrated occupational health and safety services and interventions by encouraging and facilitating a coherent approach; track progress towards healthier and safer work environment and healthier workforce in the UN through identification and monitoring of key performance and risk indicators and promote the collection of disaggregated data for data-driven practice and policy. provide coordination of OHS measures in global emergencies, including data driven intelligence, allowing hazard anticipation, early risk detection, standardization and policy setting in preparedness and response. and implementation with key performance and risk indicators; 5. build capacity of OHS practitioners and of managers responsible for preventing and/or responding to health and safety incidents affecting their workforce The UNOHSM has the authority on all OHS-related technical matters, in line with an established framework of accountability, while the OHS Coordinator triggers a coordinating mechanism in case of significant OHS hazards affecting UN personnel as requested by one of its technical networks. This role will be particularly prominent in the case of emergency response to global protracted OHS incidents or crises affecting personnel at all or multiple duty stations (i.e., pandemics, epidemics, natural disasters etc.) availing of all support structures and required capabilities put in place for those purposes.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
- Oversee the seamless and effective technical and managerial coordination of the activities of the UNOHSM, Inter-agency OHS Committee (IAOHS), and its sub-groups, ensuring that the activities are carried out efficiently including the organization of meetings.
- Lead the preparation of the UNOHSM activity documents for the High-Level Committee on Management (HLCM) and ensure timely submission, and the approval of the OHS coordinator.
- Lead and coordinate the development of new innovative guidelines on OHS Policy and Risk management and disseminate to UN entities to support their respective OHS programs, taking stock of the standards and guidelines produced by the HLCM OHS Forum and providing technical guidance where required.
- Develop and implement relevant standard operating guidelines and procedures for the effective functioning of the UNOHSM, and review and improve them to ensure that they are fit-for-purpose, including (a) the Standard Governance Procedure of the UNOHSM, (b) the Terms of Reference of the UNOHSM, (c) the Records and Document Repository Management Guideline, etc.
- Provide expert advice and technical leadership on Occupational Health and Safety to UNOHSM and advise the relevant technical networks and bodies within the UN system to ensure synergies and advancement of the work of the UNOHSM Promote and advance data-driven analysis, design, and improvement of the OHS conditions of the work environment and processes.
- Manage the training, performance, and activities of the Pooled OHS Experts that would serve smaller UN entities.
- Lead the UNOHSM secretariat and coordinate the secretariat support to the IAOHS Committee.
- Ensure that the work of the UNOHSM comprehensively addresses risks on all the relevant pillars of the OHS including Health, Safety, and Well-being (including mental health).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Essential:
- An advanced university degree (Masters level or above) in the field of Occupational Health and Safety (i.e. occupational medicine, occupational nursing or occupational hygiene).
- First university degree in health-related area, i.e. medicine, nursing or public health.
Desirable: Professional certification, specialization or training in Occupational, Health and Safety.
Experience
Essential:
- At least 10 years of professional experience working in occupational health and safety including management of health and safety programmes.
- Demonstrated experience developing policies, and planning and implementing occupational health and safety programs and systems in a large multinational, international organization or relevant sectors.
- Demonstrated experience at the international level.
Desirable: Experience in the development, reviews and implementation of policies.
Skills
- Excellent understanding and application of key OHS risks and controls across sectors of activity.
- Excellent knowledge and skills in the development of OHS policies, strategies, and programmes using international standards, scientific evidence and good practices. as well as(performance) indicators, both lagging and leading indicators.
- Strong skills in working across disciplines and technical areas and in managing diverse teams and groups.
- Strong skills in producing and presenting complex business model concepts, strategic plans, presentations and briefings for senior officials within the field of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).

REMUNERATION
WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 92,731 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4227 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
