JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The Green Climate Fund (GCF)—a critical element of the historic Paris Agreement—is the world’s largest climate fund mandated to support low-emission, climate-resilient development pathways. As an operating entity of the financial mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), GCF contributes to the goal of keeping an average global temperature rise well below two degrees Celsius.

The Fund seeks to engage the Senior Multilateral Governance and Board Affairs Consultant to join its team at headquarters in Songdo, Republic of Korea. The assignment is for an initial 230 days over a 12-month period , with the possibility of extension based on performance and the needs of the organization.

The Senior Consultant will provide expert advice on multilateral governance and Board affairs, focusing on GCF’s participation in the UNFCCC processes, engagement with key stakeholders such as Board members, and navigating the international climate finance architecture. This role is crucial for supporting GCF’s strategic objectives within the broader UNFCCC framework.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Provide strategic advice and guidance to GCF Senior Management and the Director of Governance Affairs and Secretary to the Board on matters related to multilateral governance, Board affairs and the international climate finance.
  • Support GCF’s engagement in UNFCCC processes, including the COP, by providing expert analysis and recommendations.
  • Facilitate effective communication and relationship-building with key stakeholders such as Board members, UNFCCC representatives, member country authorities, and climate negotiators.
  • Monitor and analyze developments in international climate finance architecture and provide insights to inform GCF’s strategies and policies.
  • Assist in drafting position papers, policy briefs, and other documentation necessary for GCF’s participation in international climate negotiations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure alignment of GCF’s strategies with global climate finance goals.
  • Represent GCF in relevant international meetings and discussions as required.

Required experience and qualifications

  • Advanced degree in International Relations, Environmental Policy, Climate Finance, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in multilateral governance, international climate negotiations, or related areas, or 2 additional years of experience with Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience with the UNFCCC processes and a deep understanding of the international climate finance architecture.
  • Proven track record of engaging with high-level stakeholders, including government representatives, international organizations, and multilateral boards.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and provide strategic advice.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience in building and managing relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of other UN languages is an asset.
