The mission of External and Corporate Relations (ECR) is to help build financial and political support for the World Bank Group, strengthen the Bank Group’s role as a global thought leader in development by enhancing and safeguarding its reputation, and supporting operational teams to achieve country outcomes. ECR manages corporate communications and global engagement with key stakeholders, including media, civil society, foundations, private sector, donor countries, and international/multilateral organizations, as well as employee engagement. ECR also manages strategic communications and stakeholder outreach for the World Bank’s Regions and Global Practices and leads the management of reputation risk.
Within ECR, the ECR Vice President’s Front Office manages strategic planning and implementation for the VPU plus day-to-day workflow for the ECRVP, coordinating across teams, including liaison with Managing Director and Presidential Offices and others across the WBG.  
 
Duties and Accountabilities

Reporting to the ECR Vice President, the Senior Strategy Officer is responsible for providing strategic support for the ECR Vice Presidency, to support the effective delivery of the work program.  The SSO works in close collaboration with Directors and Managers to support the development and implementation of integrated solutions for the WBG, ensuring a high level of collaboration within the unit, along with external affairs colleagues at IFC and MIGA to deepen opportunities for WBG collaboration.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The SSO supports the ECR Vice President in the areas of business development and strategy, including:

•Support the ECR Vice President in developing and implementing the ECR strategy across the global team, including defining and implementing structural changes as needed.

•Advise the ECRVP on all aspects of strategic planning plus work and workforce planning for ECR.

•Undertake research, planning and other tasks to inform the development and implementation of the ECR strategy, as directed by the ECRVP, and working closely with the ECR management team.

•Coordinate with ECR directors and managers, and staff from other VPUs on strategy matters as required.

•Organize and running strategy planning meetings with ECR directors and managers.

•Lead on development and implementation of certain projects, assigned by the ECRVP.

•Assist the ECR VP to prepare for any discussions or updates on the ECR strategy to the President, Senior Management, or the Board. 

•Support the alignment of key strategic and cross-cutting issues and corporate priorities with ECR’s overall work program, working closely with the responsible directors and managers.

•Monitor the overall work program and aggregate deliverables.

•Develop strategic relationships across WBG teams including the Senior Leadership Team, to build support for ECR and its strategy.

•Represent or support the ECR VP as needed in key planning meetings across the WBG, including with the President and Managing Directors and their offices.

 

Selection Criteria

 

•Master’s degree (International Relations, Development, Communications/Public Affairs, Economics, or other related field) plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience or equivalent years of education and experience. 

•Excellent political judgment, negotiation, and analytical skills.

•Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

•A proven track record of success working with executive leadership and other senior staff.

•Willingness to travel.

•Spoken and written fluency in English required, knowledge of other UN languages is a plus

•Broad knowledge and experience in the function of external affairs to support the effective delivery of the WBG and its business strategy, and knowledge of the WBG and its business priorities.

•Personal engagement in shaping and leading new agendas, bringing thought leadership and analysis together with delivery capacity for maximum impact.

•Demonstrated in-depth experience working across disciplinary boundaries and supporting the building of multidisciplinary teams and their effective collaboration.
