The overall mandate of the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is to provide leadership, operational support and oversight of the security management system to enable the safest and most efficient conduct of the programmes and activities of the United Nations System.

UNDSS has it’s headquarter in New York and have operations in more than one hundred countries.

UNDSS Bangladesh is supporting the UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes in Bangladesh, through security advice and guidance so to enable the UN agencies to conduct their operations in the safest way possible as well as enabling the safety and security of UN staff and assets nationwide..

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of key functions:

  • Provision of reliable and secure driving services
  • Proper use of vehicle
  •  Day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicles in UNDSS fleet inventory.
  •  Ensure availability of documents/ supplies in vehicles in fleet.
  1. Ensures provision of reliable and secure driving services by a) driving office vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items as assigned and b) receiving / transporting official personnel and visitors at / to /from the airport.
  2. Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle log of the utilized vehicle, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports. Assisting Admin focal point of UNDSS in regular checks of vehicles for damages, maintenance of vehicle logs.
  3.  Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, etc. Assisting Admin Focal Point of UNDSS in ensuring that timely servicing is carried out on all UNDSS assigned vehicles.
  4.  Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts.
  5. Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents.

Institutional Arrangement

Under the guidance and supervision of the UNDSS Security Advisor and direct supervisor, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to UNDSS team in Bangladesh. The Driver demonstrates a client-oriented approach, high sense of responsibility, punctuality, courtesy, tact and the ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
  • Completion of secondary education.
Experience:
  • A minimum 2 years of relevant work experience.
Required skills:
  • Minimum of two years work experience as a professional driver; safe driving record.
  •  Knowledge of driving rules and regulations.
  • Basic elementary knowledge of motor machines and a valid driver’s license.
  • Be able to do minor repairs, particularly on common issues related to vehicle breakdown during road trips.
Desired additional skills:
  • Experience in emergencies and security a definite advantage.
  • Previous working experience with a UN agency an asset.
  • Experiences working with National and or international Projects is desirable.
  • Experience in Defensive driving training is desirable.
  • One-year driving experience in Cox’s Bazar area including Camps is desirable.
  • Experience in driving to the district and Upazila level in Bangladesh.
Required Language(s):
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Bangla is required.
