Org. Setting and Reporting
The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration. This post is located in the General Maintenance Shop, Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports directly to the General Foreperson of the Unit under the supervision of the Chief of the Plant Engineering Section.
Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance of the General Foreperson of the Unit and the supervision of the Chief of the Plant Engineering Section, the incumbent is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the General Maintenance Shop which includes grounds keeping, structural maintenance (wall stud, sheet rock, wall, flooring, curtain wall, pavement, masonry, etc.) and interior improvement works (painting, work stations installation, repair and maintenance of acoustical ceilings, installation of video monitors etc.) • Plan, direct, guide and supervise the General Maintenance staff and contractors assigned to the Shop with respect to all requests, tasks, and projects for general maintenance work throughout the UN Complex, the off-site buildings and the Secretary-General’s residence. • Review work orders (WO) received through the Computerized Management System (iNeed), review blueprints, schedule daily assignments for all staff in the shop and record the completion of WO’s in the system. • Establish, implement and maintain records for the preventive maintenance schedule of all general maintenance-related items. • Prepare written estimates for work to be done for outside agencies. • Conduct daily visual inspections of UN buildings and premises and records its conditions for repairs or replacement. • Monitor the inventory of supplies and materials and place orders as needed. • Conduct performance evaluation for staff and contractors on a regular basis. • Coordinate with other shops for the completion of the job such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpet and locksmith security. • Ensure that the shop materials are organized and all power equipment is functioning safely and properly. • Review and approve leave schedules for the shop to ensure appropriate coverage for all the work that needs to be completed. • Assist the General Foreperson with periodic reports and participate in walk-through with prospective contractors; and • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the General Foreperson and the Chief of Plant Engineering Section.

Education
High School or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
A certificate in OSHA 30-hour Construction is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten (10) years of related experience in field of general maintenance, painting, carpentry, masonry, upholstery, and/or carpet installation is required. Experience in the fields of building construction, operations, and/or maintenance is required. Experience managing third party contractors is desirable. Experience in construction or alteration project management is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
