Duties and Responsibilities
1. Background of the assignment: United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI’s goals are: – to advance understanding of crime-related problems; – to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; – to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; – to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance. 2. Purpose of the assignment: This position is located within the Counter-Terrorism Programme of UNICRI. In the framework of the project “Gender-based Discrimination and Prevention of Violent Extremism (PVE) in the Sahel”, the local consultant is envisaged to support UNICRI in the delivery of tailor-made training modules to local stakeholders, with the aim to strengthen beneficiaries’ capacities to develop and implement gender-responsive PVE initiatives in Mauritania. 3. Specific tasks to be performed by the consultant: Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, and in close collaboration with the project team, the incumbent will perform the following tasks: – Review training modules and materials, ensuring they are gender-sensitive and that context-specific policy development related to gender equality is included; – Prepare the delivery of two workshops and adapt the training material (PowerPoint presentations, handouts, exercises) to the relevant target group; – Liaise with the Local PVE Expert to coordinate presentations to be delivered in the three-day workshops, focusing on the delivery of gender-related sessions; – Deliver a three-day workshop to journalists and media representatives. This will include presentations in plenary as well as interactive and participatory sessions; – Deliver a three-day workshop to religious guides. This will include presentations in plenary as well as interactive and participatory sessions; – Perform other work-related duties as requested.
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced university degree (i.e. Master or equivalent) in educational sciences, gender studies, social studies, or other related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of three years of relevant working experience in social sciences and/or gender equality and/or education is required; Previous work experience on issues pertaining to gender and prevention of violent extremism in the relevant geographical region is highly desirable.
