Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP, in 2017 launched the global Faith for Earth Coalition to strategically engage with faith-based organizations with a mission to “To Encourage, Empower and Engage with Faith-Based Organizations as partners, at all levels, toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and fulfilling Agenda 2030.” In doing so, UNEP is engaging with faith-based organizations to realize an impact on local communities’ sustainable livelihoods based on common spiritual values. The Strategy focuses on mobilizing faith communities and faith-based investments in supporting SDGs implementation while greening their assets and providing the needed knowledge for effective messages of faith leaders with decision makers and the public. The three overarching goals of the strategy relate to 1) Leadership for policy impact; 2) Green Faith-Based Financing to achieve the SDGs; and 3) Knowledge-based decision support system. This internship is located in the Faith for Earth Coalition, the Law Division, UNEP. The Intern reports to the Principal Coordinator of the Coalition. 1- Assist in executing the Faith for Earth Strategy and associated projects by actively participating in research endeavors that explore connections between various faiths and environmental conservation. 2- Assist in developing in a consultative manner the Faith for Earth Mainstreaming Strategy and contribution to UNEP’s Med-Term Strategy. 3- Aid in organizing, facilitating, and documenting discussions during meetings conducted by the Faith for Earth Coalition. 4-Investigate key priorities and thematic areas of the Faith for Earth Coalition to contribute valuable insights and information. 5- Investigate “Beyond Formal Law” mechanisms, systems and approaches to environmental governance. 6- Assist in the preparation of global webinars and events related to the Faith for Earth Coalition. 7- Contribute to the creation of content for multiple communication channels, including social media, websites, newsletters, and other platforms. This content should aim to promote and inspire environmentally conscious actions within faith communities. 8- Actively participate in connecting and communicating with faith-based environmental organizations to foster collaboration and strengthen the Coalition’s network. 9- Support in the development of various progress reports and articles highlighting the interconnections between faith, values, and beliefs in the context of environmental conservation. The duties of the intern will be assigned based on the needs of the Principal Coordinator and priorities under the Strategy.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must have a Masters’ degree or equivalent in either social and behavioral sciences, law, international development, environmental studies, theology, or communications.
