Duties and Responsibilities
1. Background of the assignment: United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI’s goals are: – to advance understanding of crime-related problems; – to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; – to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; – to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance. 2. Purpose of the assignment: This position is located within the Counter-Terrorism Programme of UNICRI. In the framework of the project “Gender-based Discrimination and Prevention of Violent Extremism (PVE) in the Sahel”, the local consultant is envisaged to support UNICRI in the preparation and delivery of tailor-made training modules for journalists and media representatives, with the aim to strengthen the capacity of beneficiaries to incorporate a gender perspective in their PVE reporting, ensuring that the different roles of women and men, girls and boys are represented and recognized through information and communication channels. 3. Specific tasks to be performed by the consultant: Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, and in close collaboration with the project team, the incumbent will perform the following tasks: • Prepare the delivery of gender and PVE capacity-building workshop tailored to journalists and media representatives by reviewing and adapting the existing training material (PowerPoint presentations, handouts, exercises) to ensure it reflects the Mauritanian media landscape; • Elaborate media-specific content and sessions to strengthen the capacity of beneficiaries to incorporate a gender perspective in their PVE reporting; • In liaison with the Local Gender and PVE Experts, coordinate presentations to be delivered in the three-day workshops, focusing on the delivery of media-related sessions; • Contribute to the delivery of a three-day workshop to journalists and media representatives, which will be held in Nouakchott on 5-6-7 November. This will include presentations in plenary as well as interactive and participatory sessions; • Perform other work-related duties as requested.
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced university degree (i.e. Master or equivalent) in journalism, social sciences or other related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of three years of relevant working experience in the media landscape in Mauritania is required; Previous work experience on issues pertaining to the prevention of violent extremism in the relevant geographical region is highly desirable.
Languages
Fluency in French and Arabic is required.
