JOB DESCRIPTION

Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Office of the Director (OD), Office of the Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development (OISC) in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). OISC supports the work of the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC),the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) and the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). More information can be found on our website: at https://www.un.org/ecosoc/en. The Economics Affairs Officer reports to the Director of OISC.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: Economic or sector analysis: • Monitors economic developments in a defined area and identifies recurrent and emerging issues of concern to the United Nations. • Designs and conducts studies of selected issues in economic development and draft resulting reports. • Develops draft policy recommendations pertaining to area of work. • Formulates proposals for development strategies, policies and measures for presentation to intergovernmental bodies and others. • Attends international, regional, and national meetings to hold discussions with representatives of other institutions. • Organizes expert group meetings, seminars, etc. on development issues. • Reviews and prepares statements, summaries, background notes, talking points and other materials including for use by senior staff . Intergovernmental support • Provides substantive support to intergovernmental bodies (such as the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, and the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). • Liaises and coordinates activities and engagements with permanent missions and other UN offices. • Represents organizational unit at international, regional and national meetings. • Supports communication with Member States and delegations engaging in the work of the Council. • Collaborates with DGACM to the organization of and preparations for ECOSOC Bureau meetings. General • Supports the Director in his/her guidance, oversight and coordination of the work of the Office. • Oversees the human resources and budgetary matters. • Oversees preparation of the divisional programme plans and other programme management tasks in coordination with the Office of the Undersecretary-General. • Oversees website revisions and content updates and tracking of IT physical infrastructure management. • Supports junior staff, reviewing their work and providing feedback. • Participates in intra- and inter-Departmental undertakings of broader concern to represent the views or interests of the organizational unit. • Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s service. • Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, drafting and policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required. Experience in supporting the work of United Nations intergovernmental bodies on sustainable development is desirable. Experience in working with various UN system entities and stakeholders, including on communication, is desirable. Experience in a front office is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
