Duties and Responsibilities
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. The internship in CELADEPopulation División of ECLAC in Santiago (Chilwill last 3 months (renewable till 6 months depending on the needs of the Office. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an “asneeded” basis. Under the supervision or overall guidance of Population Affairs Officer, the intern is expected: To search, collect, and organize information and reference materials on population issues from various sources To review population and demographic papers and make notes and detailed abstract of them To generate and analyze demographic and population and development indicators To process censuses and surveys microdata bases in order to generate sociodemographic indicators and make preliminary analysis of them. In the case of census microdata processing, the software by default is Redatam (others would be allowed in some caseTo support the organization and servicing of meetings in the areas covered by the Division, workshops of divisional projects and intergovernmental conferences. To carry out other tasks as required by the Division.
Qualifications/special skills
1 Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. 2 Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalen, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. 3 Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and REDATAM 4 Ability to draft working documents and papers is highly desirable. 1 Candidates for the UN Internship Programme are required to cover the cost of travel including visa, accommodation, health insurance and other living expenses for the duration of the internship. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
