JOB DESCRIPTION

Background

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRis currently supporting the USAID mission in Guatemala in monitoring migration indicators among households in targeted areas. The objective of this study is to collect information regarding household composition, socio demographics, and recent migration experiences from around 2,500 households located across different departments in Guatemala.

IFPRI is seeking a qualified survey taker (Collaboratoto assist in conducting the household survey between November and December The households will be contacted exclusively over the phone. Each phone call is expected to last 30 minutes. The survey will be implemented in the main language of the household, which may include Spanish, Mam, Ixil, Qeqchi, and Kiche.

IFPRI will provide to the Collaborator the digital survey instrument (using SurveyToGo softwar, the survey manual, and the electronic tablets to implement the survey. The list of phone numbers of the sampled households to be called and interviewed will also be provided to the Collaborator; this list will need to be updated, while reaching the households through their community leaders or other interviewed household in the sampled areas.

All the data collection, including the survey training (3 effective day, is expected to be completed in 45 weeks. The survey training is planned to be conducted in Xela (Quetzaltenang.

 

Scope of work

The Collaborator will be responsible for the following specific activities:

  • Recruit the fieldwork team, including a general coordinator, supervisor, and bilingual enumerators.
  • Coordinate all the necessary logistics with the IFPRI team and local partners for the survey planning.
  • Provide adequate space, equipment, internet access, and printed materials to hold the 3day training with the survey takers and supervisor. The collaborator will also be responsible for the provision of food, transportation, and lodging to the supervisor and enumerators, as well as provision of data plans for internet and telephone access during the survey training.
  • Conduct the household phone surveys, including provision of data plans for internet and telephone access during survey implementation and for all necessary coordination among survey takers, supervisor, general coordinator, community leaders, and the IFPRI team.
  • Upload on a regular basis the information collected in each tablet to the SurveyToGo server such that the information is secured and IFPRI can easily access to it.
  • Provide permanent online and phone support to all survey takers and supervisor.
  • Provide weekly field reports to IFPRI.
  • Prepare a technical note on the survey implementation, detailing any problems encountered during the fieldwork, special cases recorded, among others.

 

Required qualifications of the survey team leader

  • Graduate studies in Social Sciences, Agricultural Engineering, Rural Development, or related fields plus five or more years of professional experience in these fields.
  • Demonstrated professional experience on conducting producer and household surveys in Guatemala within the past 5 years.
  • Extensive experience in building trust and good relations with interviewees and communities in rural Guatemala.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

 

Preferred qualifications

  • Field experience in rural development, migration, and food security.
  • Experience in conducting household phone surveys.
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
