OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

The culture team at UNESCO Jordan supports the Jordanian government to preserve and promote tangible and intangible cultural heritage assets in the country. In this context, UNESCO office works in close collaboration and partnership with the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Department of Antiquities, as well as relevant national and local authorities to ensure the sustainable conservation of the country’s rich cultural heritage.

UNESCO promotes socioeconomic development of in local communities, focusing on investing in cultural heritage preservation, while also creating decent livelihood opportunities, linking humanitarian and development assistance, mitigating the immediate need for employment creation among women and youth while also paving the way for longer term investments in cultural heritage preservation and sustainable local tourism development. By fostering greater community engagement in preserving both tangible and intangible heritage in Jordan, UNESCO aims to ensure that a significant portion of local communities benefits from the revenue generated by sustainable tourism.

The assignment falls within the framework of the “Green AlSalt: Public Spaces and Living Heritage for SocioEconomic Development”, a joint project between UNHabitat and UNESCO. The primary objective of this project is to enhance the socioeconomic wellbeing and preserve the integrity of AlSalt City through the revitalization of public spaces and the valorization of living heritage assets.

Under the general supervision of UNESCO Jordan Head of office and the direct supervision of the Culture Project Officer, the incumbent acts as a team member of the Culture Unit of the UNESCO Jordan Office, with an essential responsibility to support in managing, coordinating, planning of the project at hand, in addition to providing technical and professional support for all of UNESCO’s actions and contributions within the project.
The incumbent shall act as a focal point of contact within the project, and in direct coordination with the Project Officer, will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of project activities by the consultants, ensuring all actions are done as per requirements and within the time schedule.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Support the Project Officer in managing all project phases, including planning, execution, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Assist in the development of Terms of references for contracts, follow all steps in contract creation and management from organizing and collating all supporting documents to following up on deliverables and deadlines.
  • Assist with procurement procedures, including preparing request forms, obtaining quotations, and preparing purchase orders in line with UNESCO administrative rules and regulations.
  • Process payments of cash for workers by verifying supporting documents according to UNESCO internal system .
  • Assist in tracking project’s expenditures, budget monitoring, and preparation of budget revisions.
  • Carry out field missions to the project sites when needed.
  • Prepare travel arrangements for the project team, external consultants, and UNESCO’s experts including flights and hotel bookings.
  • Provide technical input on the conceptualization and planning of project activities such as developing an inventory of intangible cultural heritage in AlSalt, developing apprenticeship programs and capacity building workshops targeting economically viable ICH elements, and the rehabilitation of heritage buildings’ facades.
  • Coordinate communication between UNESCO, project partners, consultants, government institutions, and local stakeholders.
  • Draft minutes of meeting, official correspondence, and any other official document in good English language, and maintain a record of all project documents by filing them regularly on the project dedicated folder.
  • Assist in the preparation of documents and reports related to the project .
  • Assist in organizing and, coordinating the logistics of workshops, seminars, field visits, missions, and meetings related to the project and attend as needed.
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, partners, and donors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalen, in cultural heritage management, sustainable tourism, intangible cultural heritage, or in a related field.

Work experience

  • Minimum two years of relevant professional experience in the field of cultural heritage management, preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, or in a related field.

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with proven ability to edit and draft clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a multicultural environment and to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Good IT skills, including knowledge of MS software.
  • Ability to identify challenges and develop effective solutions promptly, and to take initiative and be proactive.
  • Understanding of local cultures and sensitivities, particularly in diverse environments.
  • Excellent coordination, organization, and prioritization skills, and ability to manage multiple and simultaneous tasks, and to deliver results within a specified timetable.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Work experience

  • Previous experience working with UN agency or international nongovernmental organization, preferably in the field of Cultural Heritage.
