2.      Office/Unit/Project Description

The UNDP Turkey Country Office positions itself as a development partner that brings global knowledge, through a multi-sectoral approach – the key comparative advantage of UNDP – and concentrates its work on 3 programmatic fields: i) Inclusive and Sustainable Growth, ii) Inclusive and Democratic Governance, iii) Climate Change and Environment. In addition, UNDP also plays a key role in supporting the Government of Turkey with the refugee response through its Syrian Crisis Response and Resilience Programme- relying on its experience in these three major areas (i.e. livelihoods and facilitation of job creation, municipal service delivery, youth empowerment and protection/ social cohesion).

On 6 February 2023, two devastating earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude on the Richter Scale, struck Pazarcık and Elbistan in Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye. The earthquakes and aftershocks have caused catastrophic devastation, with at least 9.1 million people in the 11 hardest-hit provinces likely to have been directly impacted. The severity of crisis is so massive as acknowledged at the UN level through declaration of Crisis Level 3 for Turkiye, which is regarded as a full-blown corporate emergency requiring the attention of the entire organization.

In line with the global mandate of UNDP and its position as a development partner in above mentioned areas, Türkiye Country Office made a flash appeal for its post-earthquake activities to provide timely principled life-saving multisectoral assistance to people affected by the earthquakes, with an emphasis on assisting communities to survive the winter, in support of the Government-led relief effort and support the rapid delivery and resumption of essential services in earthquake-affected areas.
