JOB DESCRIPTION

Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus. The position is based in Nicosia. The Geospatial Information Officer reports to the Chief of Field Technology Section (FTof UNFICYP or his/her designate.
Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Chief Field Technology Section (FT, and in consultation with the substantive components of the mission and the Senior Management Group, the incumbent will: • Be responsible for the timely preparation, maintenance and provision of geographic information, satellite imagery and maps, both physical and digital, in support of the mission’s operations. • Leads the development of geographic information and mapping applications including webbased applications; oversees the design and development of the UNFICYP GIS website. • Coordinates and oversees the collection, processing, evaluation and dissemination of geographic data. • Conducts geographic/terrain analysis studies and prediction of the effects of terrain, weather and situation on the mission’s operations, through image processing. • Implements quality assurance/quality control (QA/Qprocedures on all products generated and disseminated by the Section, including geographic data and maps. • Coordinates with UNFICYP counterparts in the military, UN Police and Civil Affairs on their requirements; collecting, sharing and presenting geospatial data. • Liaises with the GIS Section in Brindisi on geospatial data management, visualization and application support. • Leads the geospatial data, visualization and application development on Mission side for the Situational Awareness Tool Unite Aware (Uand supports all aspects of the UA application, both on desktop and mobile devices. • Supports and advises the Mission and its established working groups on Unite Aware related geospatial data, visualization and application processes and compose, file and monitor relevant change management requests • Provides input and conducts geographic information training and education programmes for staff in the mission, including Unite Aware. Participates in mission fieldwork and survey as required. • Designs, implements and maintains the mission’s geographic database system as well as other geographic information systems and associated services, ensuring appropriate data security and access controls. • In coordination with GIS Section at UNGSC Brindisi, designs, implements and maintains the mission’s geographic information infrastructure including servers and network, largeformat plotters and scanners, printers and mobile devices. • Coordinates and conducts user needs assessment, feasibility studies, systems analysis, design and implementation of technological solutions, together with user documentation to support the mission’s operations. • Plans and prepares all GISrelated budget requirements, requisitions and technical evaluations. • Works in collaboration with the UNFICYP military Force Cartographers. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalenin Cartography, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GI, Computer Sciences and/or related fields is required. A firstlevel university degree in combination with an additional two (2) years qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
JobSpecific Qualification
A valid light vehicle Drivers’ License is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in geographic information (e.g. geographic information applications, geographic database management, geographic/terrain analysis, cartography and mapping, image processing, GPS and surveyinor information technology (Ior related fields is required. Practical experience of the following GIS software is required: ArcGIS or ArcGIS Pro and all extensions. Work experience with UN field operations is desirable. Management experience in a technical environment and field experience are desirable. Practical knowledge of working with Situational Awareness Tools like Unite Aware is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(advertised, fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competencybased interview.
