About the Program:

Air pollution is the world’s number one environmental health risk, responsible for to up to 7 million deaths every year. Beyond human health, the impacts of worsening air pollution are also affecting climate change, the water cycle, energy and food production. WRI’s One Atmosphere program is focused on accelerating air quality action through the Clean Air Catalyst, a US Agency for International Developmentfunded partnership working at the citylevel in India, Indonesia and Kenya. Additional projects include CanAIRY Alert, a pollution forecasting tool for cities in lowand middleincome countries and the Southeast Asia Community of Practice for air quality managers. This internship offers a unique opportunity to immerse a young professional in WRI’s vision and culture, collaborating with science and communication experts and leaders in the international Air Quality field to meet the mission and requirements of a highlevel donor.

 

This is a hybrid position which requires 8 days per month in the office. You can be based in our office in Washington DC Office. Existing work authorization is required at the time of application submission as WRI is unable to sponsor any visa work sponsorship for this position. To be eligible for this position, you must be a resident of DC, Maryland or Virginia at the start of employment.

 

What you will do:

In this role, you will focus primarily on social media content and strategy, digital engagement, email marketing and data analyticsworking across multiple platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook – to support communication objectives of the Clean Air Catalyst (cleanaircatalyst.or, CanAIRY Alert (canairyalert.orand other WRI One Atmosphere projects. In addition, depending on skills and interests, you may be asked to create data visuals, develop presentation decks, write and edit blogs and web content, organize webinars and inperson events, and manage SquareSpace website updates.

This position will report to Beth Elliott, Communications and Engagement Lead.

You will be supported by WRI’s Global Air Quality team based in Washington DC, London, Indore, India, Jakarta, Indonesia, Nairobi, Kenya and Mexico City

 

 

Internship Learning Outcomes:

Social Media Strategies and Digital Content Production (40%)

  • generate content ideas and social media strategies to promote WRI and partners’ work on air quality and clean air solutions
  • write text and create visuals for social media posts and website updates

 

Graphic design and video production (25%)

  • use software systems like Canva and Adobe to create compelling social media graphics, multimedia online content and communications materials
  • use basic editing programs to edit videos for social media and website, upload to YouTube
  • Support production and distribution of newsletter
  • Manage photo database of project videos

 

Writing and editing (25%)

  • research and write clear and compelling project updates, blogs, factsheets and other communications materials
  • Edit communication materials to ensure adherence to AP Style

 

  • Project management (10%)
  • Schedule online and social media communications through Emplifi
  • Manage email and newsletter marketing

 

 

What you will need:

  • Undergraduate student or new college graduate (preferably with studies in Communications, Public Relations, and/or other Sustainabilityrelateddegree
  • Familiarity with air quality, climate, public health and/or international development issues
  • Knowledge of digital media landscape for global environmental organizations and in countryspecific contexts such as Kenya, Indonesia and India.
  • Ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and web design
  • Excellent research, writing and verbal skills
  • Experience in graphic design and/or data visualization using design tools like Canva, Flourish, Adobe
  • Highly responsible, selfmotivated
  • Ability to shoot, edit and produce social videos a plus

 

Compensation

The pay for this internship opportunity is$20/hourfor undergrads; $22/hour for graduates and $24/hour for PhD students.

Length of Contract:

This is a parttime, 6months internship with a flexible start and end date.

• This is a hybrid internship that will be based out of our Washington D.C. office.

• You will be required to work in the Washington DC office at least 8 days per month.

• WRI will provide a laptop for the duration of your internship.
