JOB DESCRIPTION

Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSand head of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSC. The incumbent will be based in Bangui and reports to the SRSG through the Senior Adviser to the SRSG and Team Leader.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Provides substantive and practical support to the SRSG in implementing the Mission’s mandate; Keeps the SRSG informed on all matters requiring his personal attention, assists in formulating options as to how those matters might be handled, and ensures appropriate followup, as directed. Identifies, analyzes and monitors political developments and emerging issues with respect to the implementation of the UN’s mandate. • Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in the field mission and elsewhere in the Secretariat when required. • Monitors national and regional level political and economic developments and provides advice to field mission/UN agencies active on the ground. • Drafts periodic reports and analytical reports including, but not limited to, notes of meetings, briefing notes, code cables and inputs for reports of the SecretaryGeneral to the Security Council, as required. • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters. Participates fully in assigned operational activities related to the work of the office or mission, i.e., peacekeeping, disarmament, demobilization and reintegration, conflict prevention and resolution, postconflict rehabilitation, election administration, political and governance institutionbuilding, civil society support work, etc.; supports an integrated approach that includes a rightsbased dimension, conflict prevention sensitivity, and a gender perspective into the policy, planning and operational activities. • Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organizations, government and nongovernmental organizations. • Selects, classifies and stores in computerized databases information relating to pertinent political and economic developments in area of responsibility. • Participates in factfinding and other missions inside and outside of the Mission area as required. • Prepares meetings of the SRSG/DSRSG with officials and interlocutors from the host country. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, political economy or related area is required.

Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, political economy or related area is required. Experience in political outreach and facilitation within the context of peace and political process including Security Sector Reforms, DDRR as well in working with police and military components is required. Experience in the field of cooperation with international partners and regional organizations within conflict or post conflict context in the Central Africa region is required. Experience in supporting Senior Officials in the provision of strategic guidance for the management of peace operations’ pillars, the conduct of good office and the implementation of peace agreement including programmatic coordination and integrated delivery thereon is required. Experience in monitoring, analyzing and reporting on political processes and economic developments and dynamics is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and French is required.
