JOB DESCRIPTION

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeking to recruit a Research Project Coordinator to ensure the successful implementation of the “Restoration of Livestock Services in Conflict and Drought-Affected Areas of Ethiopia (RESTORE)” project, as well as other projects within the ILRI health program including “Evaluation of Livestock Emergencies” (ELE). This position will provide high-level technical support for animal health, veterinary public health, food safety, and laboratory activities. The job holder will be responsible for designing and executing project activities in collaboration with the project principal investigator, the senior project coordinator, and other experts.

The RESTORE project aims to support sustainable livestock systems in Ethiopia. The primary project locations include Afar, Tigray, and South Ethiopia, with additional regions including Amhara, Oromia, and Somali. Expected to last for 48 months, RESTORE aims to enhance food security, nutrition and livelihood resilience for rural communities across the country, focusing on areas affected by drought and conflict. Specifically, the project has five result areas:

Result 1: Livestock service delivery systems restored in conflict and drought affected areas.

Result 2: The quality and reliability of integrated public and private veterinary service delivery

improved, with more efficient production.

Result 3: Improved compliance and enforcement of animal health, food safety standards, responding

to market requirements.

Result 4: Availability and Quality of livestock feeds improved through farmers/pastoralists with

private sector driven fodder production and marketing.

Result 5: Enhanced quality of hide and skin through improved animal health intervention of relevant

diseases and poor skin quality

The project ELE looks to identify improvements in the delivery and impact of livestock centred support provided during humanitarian emergencies in Africa, based on reviews and field investigations.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-level technical and field-based support in the design and delivery of project activities, working closely with project partners.
  • Serve as the day to day technical lead in the field of expertise, and technically support the project research officers in the execution of research and development interventions.
  • In collaboration with the project principal investigator, senior project coordinator, and monitoring and evaluation expert, oversee the implementation of project activities to ensure high quality deliverables.
  • Support the dissemination of project results through available stakeholder platforms, including presentations and reports.
  • In consultation with the project principal investigator, design and implement animal health and veterinary public health/food safety project activities.
  • Provide technical support and oversee the design and implementation of project activities involving laboratory investigations.
  • Support data recording, analysis, and technical reporting to produce high-quality technical reports.
  • Lead major scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Develop a comprehensive training program that covers the key aspects of the project results, addressing the different project stakeholders and partners.
  • Provide capacity-building training to project stakeholders and partners including farmers and experts.
  • Perform ELE field studies including data collection, analysis, write-up and dissemination

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in veterinary science, epidemiology, or related field (e.g., MSc in Veterinary epidemiology).
  • In-depth knowledge in a technical or specialized field

Experience:

  • Master’s degree with nine years of relevant experience, or PhD with two years of relevant experience in designing animal health research and development activities.
  • Experience and expertise in food safety field research activities across various food commodities.
  • Experience in veterinary public health development research, including antimicrobial resistance.
  • Experiences working with livestock keepers, and private and public sector actors.
  • Experience in designing, implementing and analyzing laboratory investigations, with good knowledge of laboratory consumable needs and procurement processes in Ethiopia.
  • Experience in high-level data analysis and producing scientific journal articles and technical reports.
  • Experience in community-level animal health activities in Ethiopia, working with local partners.
  • Experience in animal health, herd health, epidemiology, laboratory skills, food safety, zoonoses, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), with a relevant scientific publication record to reflect this.
  • Experience in investigating interventions during livestock emergencies

Skills:

  • Skill in research design and implementation in veterinary epidemiologic research, Including field-based work with independence.
  • Skill in laboratory investigation research in veterinary medicine, food safety and antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
  • Advanced Skill in software-based data management and analysis
  • Strong technical and scientific writing
  • Effective collaboration and communication skills with partners ranging from livestock keepers to private service providers, public office experts and heads, as well as project staff, both national and international.
  • Flexible in work hours, including office work, travel and extended fieldwork.
  • Excellent spoken and written Amharic and English.
  • Proficiency in common office software.

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Grade: HG 16

Minimum Base Salary:

  • Birr 130,890 per month

Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
