JOB DESCRIPTION

Mission and objectives

UNDP’s commitment to helping countries address major health challenges is based on the principles that health is both a driver and outcome of development and that actions across a wide range of development sectors have a significant impact on health outcomes. As a development agency, UNDP focuses on addressing the social, economic and environmental determinants of health, which are primarily responsible for health inequalities. UNDP’s work in health is undertaken by an integrated team operating at global, regional and country levels. The work falls within three inter-connected areas of action: — Reducing inequalities and social exclusion that drive poor health; — Promoting effective and inclusive governance for health; and — Building resilient and sustainable systems for health.

Context

People living with diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) often struggle to access essential treatments like insulin, threatening their right to health and hindering progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This lack of access strains health systems, particularly in the context of COVID-19, universal health coverage (UHC), and the global effort to leave no one behind in healthcare access. To address this challenge, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aims to increase access to treatment and care for individuals with diabetes and other NCDs in Malawi and Uganda. The strategy focuses on developing national investment and financing frameworks, strengthening the legal and policy environment, and improving multisectoral coordination and planning. These efforts align with the right to health and the SDG targets on NCDs. The project will enhance governance and accountability through anti-corruption measures and develop costed national roadmaps to increase access to care. Globally, the initiative aims to raise awareness and advocate for better NCD care by sharing insights and tools from Malawi and Uganda’s experience. The project is supported by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.

Task Description

The online volunteer will assist the UNDP heatlh and development unit in completing deliverables for a project described above that aims to enhance access to treatment and medicines for people in Uganda and in Malawi. Each online volunteer will layout one report ranging from 40-60 pages using InDesign or a similar programme. The reports will include tables, graphs and figures.
