JOB DESCRIPTION

Organizational Setting

The main aim of the FAO Country offices, which are headed by the FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Reporting Lines

Within the Country Programme framework of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Uganda, under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Uganda, the functional, programmatic and administrative supervision of the FAO Representative in Uganda, and the direct supervision of the National Project Coordinator in close coordination with the ECTAD Country Team Leader in Uganda, and in collaboration with the Resilience team for East Africa and in coordination with the technical teams of EU- Regional Programme in Livestock and Pastoralism for Climate Change Adaptation in Eastern and Horn of Africa and other related projects or mainstream activities.

Technical Focus 

Support the implementation of FAO Uganda portfolio of projects.

Tasks and Responsibilities

•    Support design and implementation of specific interventions for pasture preservation, production, and restoration
•    Support the review and analysis of the major rangeland related challenges in pastoral production systems especially Karamoja.
•    Collaborate with MAAIF animal nutrition division and District Local Government (DLGs) departments in planning and strengthening strategies for peaceful co-resistance among land users
•    Identify and support the livestock farmers to practice rangeland resilience and sustainable management practices.
•    Provide technical support to rangeland management and support preparation of technical briefs on scope of sustainable rangeland management techniques in selected project sites.
•    Support indigenous fodder seed systems development and certification
•    Support data collection and facilitate interaction with relevant stakeholders engaging in resilient rangeland practices implementation.
•    Facilitate data feedback for monitoring indicators of resilient rangeland practices implementation and sustainability indicators of pastoral systems
•    Support the development and scaling-up of community-based breeding programmes.
•    Facilitate and participate in training and validation workshops on rangeland management techniques, and climate change.
•    Support community engagements, co-creation, and knowledge dissemination workshops on sustainable and restoration rangeland management practices.
•    Contribute to the preparation of regular reports on the progress of the implementation of the project
•    Perform other related duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

•    Bachelor of Science Degree in rangeland management, agriculture, or natural resource management
•    5 years of relevant experience in rangeland management and related agrostology practice
•    Working knowledge of English (Level C), other local languages used in Karamoja would be an asset
•    National of Uganda

Technical/Functional Skills 

•    Technical experience in designing and implementation of pasture preservation, production, and restoration.
•    Practical experience regarding rehabilitation of degraded rangelands.
•    Vast knowledge in innovative techniques for rain and flood water harvesting, groundwater management, etc. for rejuvenation of rangelands.
•    Technical analytical skills and proposal formulation for various rangeland management interventions
