JOB DESCRIPTION

Organizational Setting

The main aim of the FAO Country offices, which are headed by the FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Uganda, the functional, programmatic and administrative supervision of the FAO Representative in Uganda, and the direct supervision of the National Project Coordinator in close coordination with the ECTAD Country Team Leader in Uganda, and in collaboration with the Resilience team for East Africa, and in coordination with the technical teams of EU – Regional Programme in Livestock and Pastoralism for Climate Change Adaptation in Eastern and Horn of Africa and other related projects.

Technical Focus 

Support the implementation of FAO Uganda portfolio of projects.

Tasks and Responsibilities

•    Provide technical guidance on all livestock production thematic areas covering climate-smart livestock production skills including but not limited to, veterinary care, feed formulation and nutrition, herd size management and herd improvement, livestock breeding, livestock market system and value chain development systems and similar themes.
•    Contribute to the production of technical training manuals and related capacity building materials, coaching, and mentoring on animal production, and husbandry
•    Work closely with front line animal health and husbandry service providers to conduct behaviour change campaigns on identified animal and zoonotic disease risk drivers’, husbandry practices among pastoralists.
•    Initiate and facilitate livestock owners to access reliable markets of livestock and its products.
•    Document best practices, success stories and lessons learned based on beneficiaries’ feedback and own observations from the field contribute to preparation of reports.
•    Initiate and provide business development services to strengthen private vet services and expand outreach in pastoral production systems.
•    Support the development of training, visit and mentorship system for targeted livestock producers with progressively trackable indicators
•    Support data collection and facilitate feedback for monitoring indicators of climate-smart livestock practices implementation and sustainability indicators of pastoral systems.
•    Any other task assigned by the project manager

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

Advertisement

•    Bachelor’s degree in animal science, veterinary science, livestock management, or equivalent
•    At least 5 years’ experience in animal science, production/husbandry, animal feed, and rangeland management
•    Working knowledge (Level C) of English
•    National of Uganda

Technical/Functional Skills 

•    Experience in animal resource management and good knowledge of the livestock sector in the cattle corridor
•    S/he should have practical experience in livestock production and value chain development.
•    Strong understanding of operational management, fiduciary risk, attention to Value for Money and the importance of learning and continual improvement.
•    Demonstrated a solid understanding of veterinary care, feed formulation and pasture management, rangeland management, herd size management and herd improvement, livestock breeding, livestock market systems and livestock value chain development and similar themes.
