This position is based at the ESA HQ – Paris, France

Propulsion test facilities and services team is under the responsibility of the Infrastructure and Value Chain department.

We ensure the maintenance in operational conditions of ESA-owned engine test facilities operated by the industry and the public sector, and setting up and managing the corresponding contracts with the different operators.

After having been introduced to the functionalities of a propulsion test bench, you will take care of the following deliverables, :

  • A fluidic database;
  • Teaching & Support of the team in using the 3D printer of the department;
  • Teaching & Support of the team and the Test Bench Operators in the use of the 3D Scanner.

Fluidic database:

Propulsion tests are performed with different fluids. In order to quickly assess fluid conditions in the FGSE (Fluid Ground Support Equipment) of the test bench a database shall be prepared.

This database shall include parameters like viscosity, fluid status (gaseous, liquid), density, heat conductivity, vapour pressure, mass, etc and shall cover at least the following fluids (GN2, GOX, LH2, LOX, GHE, LHE, LCH4, GCH4, Kerosene, H2O2) under different temperature and pressure conditions.

The Test Facilities and Services Section will also start FGSE rental. To do so, new equipment will have to be mastered and users will have to be introduced to these equipment.

You will prepare:

  • User Manuals for Soft and Hardware;
  • Teaching Supports (Powerpoint Slides);
  • Training material (training mock-ups).

Education

You must be a university student, preferably in your final or second-to-last year of a university course at Master’s level and you need to remain enrolled at your University for the entire duration of the internship.

Additional requirements

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

Knowledge and background in the following is an asset:

  • Space business, in particular in engine and propulsion technics
  • Thermal and mechanical / fluidics
