UNOPS ETMCO is recruiting for this position: Engineering Intern based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The internship is a learning opportunity that targets fresh and prospective graduates graduates. The Engineering Intern will assist the Infrastructure Unit and support the ETMCO team. The intern will be exposed to practical learning and working experiences that foster the development of his /her path.

 

 

The Engineering Intern will be responsible for the following tasks under the close supervision and guidance of the Lead Civil Engineer.

● Assist in supervising the works on-site on a daily basis.

● Assist in collating feedback and preparing reports.

● Follow-up adherence towards HSSE requirements.

● Assists in conducting site assessments.

Technical tasks:

● Assist architects, engineers, and quantity surveyors in the planning of projects and scheduling of tasks.

● Assist in ensuring the documents are prepared to meet the quality standard requirements.

● Assist in timely delivery of the expected outputs.

● Assist in producing bills of quantities of the proposed works.

● Assist in the supervision of construction works.

● Assist in preparing daily site logs and health & safety logs.

● Assist in carrying out an inspection of works and recording such inspection at specific milestones during the life of the construction in line with the projects’ specifications.

● Assist in witnessing and recording quality control checks (such as concrete slump test, sampling of cubes, crushing of cubes, spacing/number/size and cover of reinforcement, etc., vibrating of concrete, etc.).

● Assist in the preparation of site progress reports including images and videos as required.

● Assist in following up on project progress versus planned schedule and raise any deviation with supervisors.

● Assist in coordinating the team effort to complete any task as would be required and appropriate if assigned.

Training components and learning elements

The intern will be exposed to practical learning on the site with the supervision of a senior person on site.

Participation in missions or training courses

The intern will take online courses available in the intranet and attend workshops related to the infrastructure field.

 

 

Education

  • To qualify, the candidate should be currently enrolled in a university degree or have graduated from a university degree within the last 3 years at the time of the application. Preferably the candidate is studying or have studied one of the following subjects: Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Water Engineering, Construction Management or any other related fields.

Experience

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience.
Skills
  • Knowledge in Architecture and Engineering design software such as AutoCAD is an added advantage.

Language

  • Fluency in written, reading and oral English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN Official language is an asset.

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.

Terms and Conditions

  • For staff positions only, UNOPS reserves the right to appoint a candidate at a lower level than the advertised level of the post.
  • For retainer contracts, you must complete a few mandatory courses ( they take around 4 hours to complete) in your own time, before providing services to UNOPS. Refreshers or new mandatory courses may be required during your contract. Please note that you will not receive any compensation for taking courses and refreshers.
