NRC has been actively involved in providing humanitarian assistance to vulnerable displaced populations in Nigeria. operating in the BAY states and Plateau since 2015. Providing services through Shelter, ICLA, Education, Protection for violence and WASH. The WaSH program in Yola, Adamawa state, aims to address critical water, sanitation and hygiene needs in the region specifically affected by displacement and conflict. The WASH Assistant- Social role will play a pivotal role within this well-established initiative directly supporting efforts to foster sustainable hygiene behaviours and practices. The WASH Assistant is role also responsible for assisting in leading community engagement efforts, collaborating with local authorities, facilitating hygiene promotion activities and ensuring that the voices and needs of the community are reflected in program planning and implementation.

These strategic locations have allowed NRC greater reach from the north and south parts of the North-East and North Central region and allowed NRC to contribute to bridging the gap between humanitarian aid and development cooperation, including by focusing on equitable access to basic services and strengthening the rights of displaced people and returnees. In addition to the Country Office and the above-mentioned Area Offices, NRC has sub-office structures in Dikwa, Monguno, Biu, Mubi, Pulka, and Gwoza.

If you are those people, the Norwegian Refugee Council in Nigeria is looking for an enthusiastic, passionate WaSH Technical Assistant to join our team in Area South, Adamawa State.

Roles and responsibilities

  1. Adherence to NRC policies, guidance and procedures
  2. Take account of gender, protection, the environment, and other important cross-cutting concerns in programme design, implementation, and reporting; carry out activities in a way that reflects the needs of specific groups and individuals e.g. elderly people, minority groups, children, and people with disabilities.
  3. Fill themonitoring checklists for latrines and hygiene promotion activities as well as collect user satisfaction views on safety and privacy of the latrines as well as appropriateness of the sanitation options.
  4. To establish good working relationship and collaboration with other implementing agencies and work hand in hand with the existing WASH committees.
  5. To assist in selecting the beneficiaries according to NRC vulnerability criteria,
  6. Participate in meeting with relevant local authorities [Ministry of Water, Ministry of Health, RUWASSA etc], sectoral working groups and other key stakeholders.

Specific responsibilities:

  1. Work closely with the artisans to ensure new constructions, rehabilitation, repair and maintenance of WASH infrastructure retain NRC standards and quality based on the BoQs and Designs.
  2. Support the WASH officer in the construction activities especially in an integrated approach with FSL related activities especially dams and water troughs.
  3. Provide daily and weekly reports on routine water supply, sanitation and hygiene promotion activities to the WASH officer.
  4. Monitor WASH facilities, latrine cleanliness, usage and maintenance within the assigned project locations.
  5. Support the informal and formal training sessions (according to identified needs) for hygiene promoters and evaluate the impacts of this training.
  6. Supervise Water supply and sanitation activities in line with relevant standards, codes of conduct, and humanitarian principles.
  7. Supervise Sanitation activities and resources so that they are implemented and handed over or ended in a way that promotes local capacities and sustainable operations.
  8. Any other assignment as may be required by the WASH Officer or WASH Coordinator

Generic professional competencies

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in WASH projects in a humanitarian/early recovery context
  • Technical background in Public Health, Environmental Health, Water and Environmental Engineering or Civil Engineering. Extensive experience may substitute for specific qualifications but not vice versa.
  • Political and cultural awareness and experience of working where insecurity is a major issue
  • Sensitivity to the needs and priorities of disadvantaged populations (minority groups etc)
  • Demonstrated experience of integrating gender and diversity issues into WASH Programming.
  • Ability to work independently in a result oriented multi-tasking and multi-cultural environment and manage conflicting priorities
