Organizational Setting
The Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC) and FAO are implementing the project Mainstreaming Sustainable Land Development and Management in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana (SLDM). The project aims at establishing an enabling environment for promoting sustainable and climate-resilient land development, management, and reclamation in support of Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) through activities working at (i) streamlining policy, regulation, and governance; (ii) developing institutional and human capacities; and (iii) strengthening local governance in three regions where the project is being implemented. The project is implemented at three levels – national, regional, and local – the SLDM project is designed to create an enabling legal and policy framework informed by policy feedback loops nurtured with ground reality and inclusive participation.
Reporting Lines
The incumbent will work under the direct general supervision of the FAO Representative in Guyana; in addition to the guidance and day-to-day supervision of the Project’s Chief Technical Advisor (CTA) and Operations Specialist. The appointee will work in collaboration with GLSC and other SLDM and FAO team members.
Technical Focus
The incumbent will facilitate the transport services as required for the smooth implementation of the SLDM Project. The Driver will be based on the premises of the GLSC in the Land Policy Planning and Projects Division under the day-to-day supervision of the CTA/Project Manager and Operations Specialist.
Tasks and Responsibilities
The incumbent will undertake the following tasks:
• Safely drive the SLDM Project vehicles (both automatic and manual transmission), for the transport of authorized personnel, materials and equipment to designated locations to execute project activities.
• Facilitate the local missions of the SLDM Project and FAO.
• Provide emergency transportation as the need arises.
• Keep a daily logbook of official trips, mileage, gas consumption, oil changes and greasing.
• Prioritize the safety and security of yourself, personnel and resources that is under your care while executing your duties.
• Comply with the Laws of Guyana and ensure that the project vehicle(s) conform with the licensing, fitness, insurance, and any other traffic department regulations.
• Undertake day-to-day maintenance of assigned vehicles, including cleaning; oil, water, battery, and brakes checks; and ensure that the supervisor is notified of any issues that may arise in timely manner.
• In collaboration with the relevant FAO staff, schedule vehicle maintenance and repairs with the FAO authorized supplier, in a timely manner; and oversee and verify the completion of major repairs works to the vehicles.
• Assist the Procurement Officer regarding the procurement of vehicle parts /supplies, etc.
• Maintain communication with the Administrative Officer for transportation arrangements.
• Follow all policies, rules and regulations in relation to the management of vehicles at FAO and GLSC.
• Support the Procurement Officer with the inscription for tagging all project assets and ensure visibility of all assets procured by the Project with logo(s), project name and any other requirements in keeping with UNFAO and UN rules and regulations.
• Perform other related duties as required.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
• Working knowledge of English is required; basic reading and writing literacy skills
• Secondary education
• Valid Driver’s license of at least 2 classes (Motorcar and Van), and ability to drive both automatic and manual transmission vehicles
• 5 years’ work experience as a driver; safe driving record; knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair

• Proven experience in driving on the various terrains (on and off-road) in Guyana.
• Certification in Defensive Driving is an added advantage.
• Certification in Mechanics is an added advantage.
