Mission and objectives

The Office of the UNHCR was established on 14 December 1950 by the UN General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country (www.unhcr.org)..

Context

This UNV assignment is part of UNHCR play area volunteer. In early 2013, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) took a significant step by opening its first field office in Irbid. This move aimed to provide crucial assistance and address the humanitarian needs of refugees and displaced populations in the region. The office’s setup included a dedicated registration unit, protection unit, and field unit to efficiently manage their mission. However, during this period, a challenge arose concerning the children accompanying their parents to the office. While waiting for interviews and services, these children had limited activities available to them, as there were no suitable spaces for them to engage in play and exploration. Recognizing the importance of play in a child’s growth and development, the UNHCR realized the need to establish designated play areas within the field office. In early 2020, the UNHCR undertook significant maintenance efforts to enhance the play area for children, ensuring they could enjoy it while seeking protection from the intense rays of the sun and adverse weather conditions. The decision was made to cover the roof of the play area, creating a shaded environment that offered comfort even during rainy days. Building upon this initiative, the UNHCR office continued its commitment to the well-being of the children by further improving the play area. In 2023. New, safer games and increased entertainment options were introduced, with the primary goal of providing refugee children with a sense of relief and reassurance. The enhanced play area not only became a source of enjoyment but also served as a secure and protected space for the children, instilling a feeling of safety amidst their challenging circumstances. By continually evolving and investing in these play area improvements, the UNHCR demonstrated its dedication to promoting the children’s happiness, development, and emotional well-being. Availability that his/her likeness appears on media, social media, photos and videos as it will be impossible for UNHCR to prevent such appearances on the public or external occasion s/he will perform tasks. S/He will need to understand that her/his picture will possibly be seen on the internet. Establishing the play area volunteer assignment aiming to: 1. To provide engaging and age-appropriate entertainment for children aged 3-13 years, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. 2. To implement comprehensive safety measures and address any potential protection concerns. 3. To enable parents to fully engage in and benefit from the intended services without the burden of childcare concerns, offering a safe and supervised space for their children during their visit. Task Description

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Registration Officer, the UN Volunteer will: • Offer support and a warm welcome to all children who are visiting the UNHCR Irbid FO. • Set up play areas and make sure they are safe and secure day by day. • Lead games, supervise children. • Build positive relationships with children, parents, careers, and professionals. • Deal with minor injuries and emergencies if needed. • Share any misinformation, or tendencies among the community of refugees/asylum seekers. Desirable Skills and experience: • A previous related work experience is a plus • The ability to work well with others • To be flexible and open to change • Excellent interpersonal communication skills. • The ability to accept criticism and work well under pressure • Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations • Thinking and reasoning skills • Advanced higher education degree or relevant training and/or professional experience may be an advantage.

Living conditions and remarks

Irbid is a peaceful city with over one million residents. People are friendly to visitors. Services in terms of banking, transportation, health, and communications are easily available. Though Arabic is the official language. The road network is good both in terms of spread and quality of the roads. Public transportation in Irbid is limited. Taxis are available. There are several shopping malls, restaurants, gyms, and cinemas. A large variety of accommodation options can be found; however, it is worth noting that prices in Irbid have generally increased in the past few years. There are no specific security threats. Irbid is a very easy city in which to live; large, has many amenities, and is modern. According to the assessment of the UN Department of Safety & Security (UNDSS) Jordan is a family duty station (category A hardship). The UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.”
