Duties and Responsibilities
This internship is located with the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT), under the Policy, Strategy, and Governance Division, Open Source Team. The internship is for 6 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the Office. The internship is unpaid and can be part time or full time. Onsite presence is highly desirable, however, a hybrid of remote can be considered as well. Interns work four to five days per week (20-35 hours), with supervision and support of a staff member. Under the supervision of the Open Source Team Lead, the Social Media Intern’s duties will include the following: • Use Trello Boards to plan, create, and curate social media content on a daily basis, maintain and update weekly editorial calendars, collect and collate multimedia information from different departments and organizations; • Monitor various sources for new content and information about what is happening in and around the UN any given week; • Edit and subtitle news videos for the Open Source Teams social media channels, using dedicated software (such as Adobe Premiere Pro); create visuals, quote cards and other materials as requested using online tools (such as Canva or Adobe Photoshop); • Attend press conferences and events at UN and other venues to gather quotes, take photos and videos which can be used in social media posts; • Take photographs and make short videos at various events at UN and other venues and beyond; • Draft posts for X, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn; • Research trends and posts from partners and suggest reposts; monitor our social media accounts for followers’ comments and questions; • Conduct weekly analysis of best performing posts and suggest improvements; • Draft visual monthly reports on performance of social media accounts, and fill in monthly statistics reporting in Excel; • Attend biweekly press briefings, and prepare summaries of such briefings; • Carry out other tasks as requested by the Open Source Team.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a)Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b)Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). Studies/degree in the areas of Information and Communications Technology, Information Science, Data Analytics, Information Systems, Information Management, Project Management, Business Management, or related field is desirable. Knowledge of developing and scheduling social media content across major platforms (e.g., Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook, LinkedIn), to increase follower engagement is required. Knowledge of conducting research on industry trends, audience preferences, and competitor activities to inform content strategies and identify new engagement opportunities is desirable. Knowledge of monitoring and responding to comments and messages in a timely manner, enhancing the brand’s reputation for responsive customer engagement is desirable. Knowledge of helping to organize and run a successful social media campaign, coordinating posts with social media leading accounts to boost campaign reach and analyzing post-campaign data for key takeaways is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Visa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements: For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or on another non-immigrant (such as F1 visa) status, will be required to obtain a G4 visa. Interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization (CPT/OPT), allowing them to undertake the internship. Terms of the internship programme: -The minimum duration of this internship is two months which can be extended up to a total period of six months. -Interns are expected to work on a full-time or part-time basis in the entity that has selected them, under the supervision of a staff member at an appropriate level. The working hours will be discussed with your supervisor at the time of the interview. Internships may be undertaken on the basis of flexible working arrangements if: -The receiving entity agrees in writing to accept an intern on the basis of flexible working arrangements. -Interns agree that they are required to work the equivalent of a minimum of at least two months on a full-time basis or four months on a part-time basis in order to receive recognition of service as an intern. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
