Who are we?

The Emergency Unit which is part of the Strategy, Programme and Learning Department in HQ is responsible for leading DRC’s approach to emergency preparedness and response, through strategy, policies and emergency focused support. The Unit’s goal is to ensure that the organisation is prepared to provide timely, relevant, principled and quality assistance at scale during an acute crisis. The Emergency unit will also facilitate the transition from immediate life-saving support for affected populations in emergencies to long-term solutions in coordination with relevant departments, which is core to DRC’s response framework.

About the job

The Global Emergency Advisor will strengthen and support the implementation of DRC’s emergency response through 1) roll out and adaptation of new global policy, guidelines, and tools 2) direct support to Regional and Country offices in emergency preparedness and emergency responses through technical and strategic advice, coordination, and monitoring, 3) capacity development of DRC and partner colleagues on emergency response, 4) engagement in technical thought leadership, innovation and engagement across humanitarian programming. Some of the main tasks for the Global Emergency Advisor include but are not limited to:

  • Provide high level strategic support, advice, and monitoring of emergency operations and preparedness within DRC country programs delivered directly or indirectly according to DRC processes and structures,
  • Support adaptation of policy, guidelines, and tools, contributing to DRC’s emergency response framework and programming handbooks in line with DRC global strategy and initiatives within the humanitarian sphere;
  • Support alignment with DRC core sectors and response framework in emergency activities, processes, tools, and protocols with a focus on preparedness, emergency and humanitarian programming quality and innovation and localised emergency and humanitarian action,
  • Lead thematic initiatives to develop policy, guidance and tools on relevant preparedness, emergency and humanitarian programming topics such as localisation, climate, anticipatory action, early recovery, centrality of protection, hard to reach demographic groups and Core Humanitarian Standards.
  • Support global organizational preparedness actions including capacity development and mobilization and allocation of resources to enable response scale up and delivery against DRC internal emergency response requirements;

About you

To be successful in this role we expect you to have solid experience with principled humanitarian emergency response and be highly motivated to make a difference for the people affected by acute crisis.

All employees should master DRC’s core competencies: Communicating, Taking the lead, Collaborating, Striving for excellence and Demonstrating integrity.

Moreover, we also expect the following:

  • At least 6 years experience designing or implementing emergency programming at response or country level;
  • Experience within the international humanitarian sector, covering both implementation and strategic/management roles at country level;
  • Previous experience at an NGO HQ or Regional office level is advantageous;
  • Experience with DRC core sectors;
  • Experience operating within an INGO with experience engaging with equitable partnerships in a humanitarian context
  • Ability to plan, co-ordinate, and lead processes that include multiple stakeholders and interests;
  • Strong understanding and application of humanitarian principles and core humanitarian standards;
  • Excellent communication skills and intercultural competencies
  • A university degree at minimum bachelor’s level

Contract length: 2 years

Work place: DRC Headquarters, Copenhagen, Denmark

Start date: Earliest possible

The position is temporary due to limited funding for the position.

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with the agreement between DRC AC at “fuldmægtig”level. This is a national position for which local terms and conditions apply.
