JOB DESCRIPTION

Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Since the beginning of the Russian military invasion on 24 February 2022, Ukraine is rapidly emerging as one of the world’s most complex emergencies with over 3 million refugees already fleeing the country and with growing humanitarian crisis and needs. Women’s groups and civil society organizations have been quick to react to the immediate priorities of their communities but face many challenges as they attempt to provide support to large numbers of internally displaced people, host-communities and those directly affected by violence and insecurity. Civil society, and particularly women’s organizations in Ukraine are in the front-line to deliver immediate humanitarian assistance to displaced women and girls. Displaced women and girls are facing multiple human rights violations, including sexual and gender-based violence.

UN Women Ukraine Country Office conducts various events, workshops, conferences, and meetings as part of its programmatic intervention including development of technical documents, tools and communication materials that require translation into Ukrainian/English. Audiences include international staff, Ukrainian Government, international participants, implementing partners, the media and communities. To meet such needs, UN Women Ukraine is interested to have an Interpreter/Translator to provide UN Women with high quality translation and interpretation services (Ukrainian/English languages).

Key Functions and Accountabilities:

  1. Provide effective interpretation to support office functions:.
  • Deliver effective interpreting services at meetings, site visits, negotiations, and other stakeholder engagement formats.
  • Ensure  full and precise delivery of bi-directional English – Ukrainian/Russian verbal communications between UN Women personnel and other stakeholders as and when required for the purposes of implementation of UN Women portfolios, as well as finance, HR, administration, communication, or partnerships functions.
  • Select the appropriate mode of interpreting (consecutive or simultaneous) in consultation with relevant stakeholders, and coordinate interpreting with any external providers involved when necessary.
  • Go on official travel to project sites and meeting locations within Ukraine upon reasonable notice.
  • Provide administrative support before, during and after meetings/events, including agendas, invitations and minutes;

2. Translate, record, and retain information relevant to office functions:

  • Deliver translations, as well as record and retain information relevant to office functions.
  • Perform translation of received documents/communication/knowledge products etc, and ensure product quality and cross-document continuity, maintaining glossaries and terminology bases as necessary.
  •  Coordinate translation work where external providers are involved.
  • Record information in the form of meeting minutes and similar products.

3. Support the office in high-quality communication with stakeholders and partners:

  • Produce and contribute to products that include but are not limited to briefs, updates, reports, media publications etc. This work may require researching and retrieving background and analytical data from internal and external sources as assigned by the requesting unit.
  •  and Support meeting organization and coordination, drafts and contribute to background materials, talking points, and other meeting-related products, as well as perform other tasks related to stakeholder communication as instructed.

4. Provide administrative support to knowledge building and knowledge sharing:

  • Provide sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice by synthesizing lessons learnt and disseminating best practices in translation/interpretation.
  • Collect feedback, ideas, and internal knowledge about processes and best practices and utilize these productively.

Recruitment Qualifications

Education and Certification:

  • Completion of secondary education required.
  • Undergraduate university degree in Philology, Linguistics, Translation, Interpretation or related field is desired but is not a requirement

Experience

  • Minimum 6 years of working experience as a translator and interpreter in Ukrainian and English is required
  • Experience in written translation of specialized texts under tight deadlines is required
  • Working experience in international organizations, UN agencies and/or INGOs/NGOs is desirable.
  • Experience of work in the humanitarian field/gender equality topics is desirable.
  • Experience in providing interpretation for national and international events is desirable.
  • Strong experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) is required
  • Experience of use of specialized translation software is desirable.

Languages

  • Fluency in English and Ukrainian is required
  • Knowledge of another UN official working language is desirable (French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
