JOB DESCRIPTION

Result of Service
The Consultant will work to realize the vision for the UN’s participation in Expo 2025, in particular, prepare and implement communication and promotion activities at the UN Pavilion at Expo 2025 to be held in Osaka, Japan.

Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Under the guidance of the Commissioner-General of the UN Pavilion, serve as the communications and public information focal point on the UN Pavilion. • Create a communication strategy for the UN Pavilion at Expo2025. Advise and provide guidance to the members of DGC Expo Team, UN Expo focal points and other staff, and partners on matters related to communication and media. • Coordinate and implement media relations and activities for the UN Pavilion, including responding to media needs and enquiries, pitching stories, preparing media packs and organizing press conferences for key moments before and during the Expo2025. • Prepares press releases, articles, speeches, talking points, interviews and other communications products. • Promote programmes, including events and exhibits, to be held by the UN and participating UN entities at Expo2025, including promoting through the official Expo2025 channels. This will entail working closely, disseminating and receiving information to and from the Expo focal points in all participating UN entities. • Manages all social media channel outputs before and during the Expo. Draft effective media and social copy in English and Japanese and post to UN/Expo specific channels where required. Maintains and updates the UN Pavilion website and social media channels. • Develops strategic partnerships with key constituencies to elicit support for and maximize impact of promotional objectives. • Represents the Commissioner-General of the UN Pavilion, as needed, to serve as a spokesperson/ liaison to media organizations and other relevant partners. • Identify, escalate and manage reputational or communication risks and crisis situations, reporting to the Commissioner-General, UNIC Tokyo, DGC and other UN offices as required. • Monitors and evaluates activity to demonstrate success, learn lessons and refine future campaigns and activity. This will include preparing weekly promotional and comms dashboard, and final report with metrics, narrative and lessons learnt by the end of the assignment. • Provide briefings and communications advice to the UN senior leadership team and VIPs visiting the UN Pavilion. • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, media, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. • Experience of working in international organizations, international business or government desirable. • Experience in developing, implementing and managing communication campaign for a major international event related to the work of the United Nations is desirable. • Experience in working with Japanese media is required. • Experience in maintaining and updating websites in English and Japanese, and managing and updating social media channels including Instagram, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, Facebook is required. • Experience in using LINE is an advantage. • Experience in organizing and promoting exhibitions and events is an advantage.
Languages
• Speaks and writes English and Japanese, fluently, clearly, independently, and professionally.

The Consultant is expected to demonstrate the following competencies: • Ability to deliver oral presentations to various audiences. • Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately. • Tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience. • Knowledge of different aspects of public information and communication. • Ability to address a range of issues in the context of political developments, public attitudes and local conditions. • Ability to rapidly analyze and integrate diverse information from varied sources. • Ability to diplomatically handle sensitive situations with target audiences and cultivate productive relationships. ==SPECIAL NOTICE== • The UN will not pay for the consultant’s travel and relocation to Japan and/or the Kansai region, including relocation or repatriation to/from the Kansai region, nor the DSA, or any travel related allowance, while working in the Kansai region • The Consultant is expected to work in shifts, on weekends and public holidays, especially between April through October 2025. • Non-Japanese nationals must hold a valid visa and work permit for at least the entire duration of this consultancy. No visa support will be provided by the UN.
