Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. Through its Regional Office for Africa (ROAf), located in Nairobi, Kenya, UN-Habitat has been supporting African governments to take early action to position themselves for predominately urban populations to achieve sustainable urbanization and the right to adequate housing for all, within the framework of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda – particularly Sustainable Development Goal 11 to “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” – and the New Urban Agenda. This post is located within the Horn and East of Africa Sub Regional Office under the Regional Office for Africa. Under the sub regional programme coordination unit, communications sector that is responsible for creating and delivering effective communication strategies that align with the organization’s mission and objectives. The Communications Intern will play a supporting role in implementing these strategies through various platforms, including digital, social media, press, and internal communications. The incumbent would be under the overall supervision of the Programme Officer in charge of the Programme Coordination Unit and under the direct supervisor of the Communications Officer. Responsibilities The Intern will undertake the responsibilities as outlined below: – Support in the general communication and visibility operations and coordinate as appropriate with other UN-Habitat staff and departments. – Assist in the drafting, editing, and distribution of press releases, newsletters, blog posts, and other written content. – Support social media management by scheduling posts, monitoring engagement, and contributing to the development of content. – Assist in the design and creation of promotional materials (infographics, brochures, posters). – Provide logistical and communications support for events. – Assist in taking photos during events, editing, disseminating and archiving. – Assist in editing basic videos to enhance storytelling and highlight key impact of projects. – Support in the overall execution of communication strategies and plans.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Undergraduate in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
