OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

To reduce childhood mobility and mortality attributable to vaccine preventable diseases by implementing routine and supplemental immunization activities for children and women of childbearing age in accordance with established technical guidelines. To eliminate measles by 2010 and increase routine immunization coverage to at least 90% in all districts. To introduce new and underutilized vaccines in all countries with demonstrated burden of diseases and as needed.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under direct guidance and supervision of the Coordinator, Integrated Immunization and VPD Surveillance and the overall guidance of WR Somalia, the incumbent will perform a wide range of tasks including, but not limited to the following:

1) Provide technical coordination and support for EPI activities in order to strengthen infant routine immunization coverage including:

Implementation of the RED/REC approach at the district level- Monitoring infant immunization coverage levels

Supplementary immunization activities

Implementation of Immunization Agenda 2030

2) Provide technical support to implementation, monitoring and evaluation of a VPI surveillance system including the following activities:

Case-based surveillance for measles with laboratory confirmation of disease

Development of national guidelines for surveillance

Training of staff on surveillance on integrated surveillance

Development and monitoring of surveillance indicators

3) Coordination of plans of work and training between immunization programme and WHE

4) Prepare and follow-up plans of action for supplemental immunization including polio NIDs, pulse campaigns, MNT campaigns, measles SIAs

5) Conduct field studies to estimate burden of disease and monitor the impact of the program activities

6) Develop and implement case management protocols for common outbreak

7) Provide technical guidance to outbreak investigations and response and other issues outlined by the WR

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: University degree in medicine. Postgraduate degree in epidemiology/public health
Desirable: Experience in research and publication in EPI related fields.

Experience

Essential: At least 7 years of extensive and practical experience in applied public health related to immunization programmes at national and international levels. Good understanding of measles elimination, polio eradication programmes. Experience in EPI disease surveillance and EPI data management
Desirable: Experience in control of communicable diseases and surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases.Experience with resource mobilization and policy development. Experience in countries in complex emergency.

  1. Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of principles, practices, methodology and techniques of immunization programmes
  2. Excellent capacity for conducting training and advocacy
  3. Excellent knowledge in analysing vaccine preventable diseases and EPI-related data, synthesizing information and presenting clear and concise conclusions and recommendations for decision making

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 77,326 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 3757 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
