Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary- General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is seeking a dynamic, highly skilled interactive map developer to support the creation of the 2025 Global Assessment Report (GAR) (http://undrr.org/gar) – a flagship publication with significant global visibility and influence. The GAR is widely recognized as an authoritative source of insights into disaster risks and resilience strategies, providing a critical tool for leaders, policymakers, and institutions worldwide. This consultancy offers a unique opportunity to directly shape the visualisation of complex global data, making it accessible and impactful for a diverse global audience. These maps cover critical issues such as global value at risk (VaR) from nature loss, climate risks, socioeconomic resilience, and human vulnerability to natural hazards. The data will incorporate national-level information based on UN standard shapefiles, designed modularly for future updates and adaptability. This provides an opportunity to work on a high-profile project that will be accessed by a global audience of decision-makers, practitioners, and researchers in disaster risk reduction. By joining UNDRR as an interactive map developer for GAR2025, you will be a key contributor to a visual resource that shapes the understanding and actions of governments and institutions around the world. The interactive map you develop will be central to the GAR’s mission of building resilience and saving lives. Within the limits of delegated authority, the consultant will be responsible for the following tasks: Design and development: Create a 3D interactive map visualization using Mapbox or D3, based on discussions with the GAR and UNDRR teams to align visualizations with UN data standards, accessibility requirements, and user expectations. Data integration: Implement a standardized data structure for seamless integration of national-level data, including key geographic and socioeconomic indicators Documentation and modularity: Provide comprehensive documentation to support future adaptations and ongoing use by UNDRR, ensuring flexibility for additional data or thematic layers. Functionality must be built in a modular way, including thorough documentation, to support ongoing and future UNDRR use. Collaboration: – Maintain reliable online connectivity and availability for regular MS Teams meetings. – Engage in weekly meetings and ad-hoc consultations with the Communications Web Team and GAR team to incorporate feedback and share progress. – Maintain a log of activities and promptly respond to inquiries.
