Project Context and Scope
Based on the language barrier Ukrainian refugees face in Hungary, IOM Hungary created a free of charge Interpretation Service in November 2022. Since then, IOM Hungary operates a booking page where people fleeing Ukraine to Hungary may request interpretation support when attending Hungarian authorities (police, civil protection, health authorities, immigration) or other entities, including schools, banks and hospitals primarily in Budapest.

Tasks to be performed under this contract
1. Provide general support to the people affected by the Ukrainian crisis when attending Hungarian authorities (police, civil protection, health authorities, immigration) or other entities, including schools, banks and hospitals primarily in Budapest.
2. Interpret from Hungarian into Ukrainian and vice versa on a wide variety of daily topics and issues (medical, education, legal etc).
3. Assist in the interpretation activity in an objective and impartial way.
4. Maintain the confidentiality and integrity of all related information by implementing control procedures in line with IOM standards of conduct and data protection rules.
5. Perform any other duties as may be assigned related to the job.
Performance indicators for the evaluation of results
1.Keep a track of all interpretations delivered with the following data included: Date; Session start; Session end; Gender; Age cohort; Nationality; no. of people assisted; Language FROM/TO; Subject; Length of time since arrival; Region of origin.
2.Prepare periodical reports and updates on interpretation services, trends and best practices.
Education
- High school Degree/Certificate with minimum 3 years or relevant work experience desirably interpretation/cultural mediation in the framework of migrants’ assistance.; or,
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Humanities, Linguistics , Literature, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with 1 year of relevant work experience.
Experience
- Experience in interpretation is required;
- Experience in the framework of migrants’ assistance is desirable;
- Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations, non-government or government institutions/organization in a multi-cultural setting is an advantage.
Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with people from varied cultures and background;
- Strong administrative and organizational skills;
- Efficiency, flexibility, high level of professionalism and ability to work under pressure.
Languages
- Fluency in English, Hungarian and Ukrainian is required
- Fluency in Russian is an advantage.
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Notes
- Any offer made to the candidate in relation to this vacancy notice is subject to funding confirmation.
- Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, verification of residency, visa, and authorizations by the concerned Government, where applicable. Vaccination against COVID-19 will be required for IOM personnel who are hired or otherwise engaged by IOM. As part of the mandatory medical entry on duty clearance, candidates may be requested to provide evidence of full vaccination. Consultants engaged to work on a home-based consultancy who do not need to travel do not need to provide vaccination records, regardless of the length of the consultancy contract.
- IOM covers Consultants against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the consultancy. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Consultants are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
- IOM does not charge a fee at any stage of its recruitment process (application, interview, processing, training or other fee). IOM does not request any information related to bank accounts.
- IOM only accepts duly completed applications submitted through the IOM online recruitment system. The online tool also allows candidates to track the status of their application.
