Result of Service
The ultimate results of service are the following: – Identification of public and private schools all over Lebanon, with a special focus on rural and marginalized areas, to participate in the SDG Stories Initiative. – Regular field visits to beneficiary schools conducted by a joint team from ESCWA and UNESCO’s Lebanese National Commission. – Successful organization of highlight events related to the SDG Stories Initiative, in partnership with ESCWA and UNESCO.

Duties and Responsibilities
Background: The SDG Stories Team was established by ESCWA’s Executive Secretary to mainstream the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among young persons in the Arab region by using the “ESCWA Stories” comic book as an educational tool. The Team visits educational institutions, interacts with students and teachers, and organizes activities and events for the promotion of the comic book and its objectives. The Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO is a national body that liaises between the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as well as the Arab League Educational Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures (ALF) on one side, and the Lebanese government and civil society on the other side, in the areas of education, science, culture, communication and information. In this capacity, the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO and its Associated Schools Network is a link between ESCWA and Lebanese schools. Against this background, ESCWA is seeking the services of designated focal points from UNESCO’s Lebanese National Commission to support and facilitate the work of the SDG Stories Team. Duties and responsibilities: Coordinating the partnership between ESCWA and the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO, in support of the “SDG Stories” Initiative. – Facilitating the process of identifying target schools to take part in the SDG Stories Initiative for the academic year 2024-2025, through UNESCO’s Associated Schools Network. – Providing the SDG Stories Team with contact information of the schools and relevant staff participating in the Initiative. – Encouraging and advising public and private schools, national authorities and stakeholders in Lebanon to adopt and implement activities related to the SDGs. – Facilitating the flow of information between ESCWA and the designated beneficiary schools in Lebanon. – Participating with the SDG Stories Team in their regular visits to beneficiary schools. – Assisting the SDG Stories Team in the planning and organizing of events relevant to the initiative. – Exchanging expertise with the SDG Stories Team and facilitating cooperation and partnership. – Contributing to the promotion of the SDGs, intergenerational dialogue, good citizenship and global leadership among teachers, staff and students participating in the SDG Stories Initiative.
Qualifications/special skills
A recognized first level university degree in education, sociology, psychology, social service, international relations, political science or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of 10 years of proven work experience with NGOs, local governments and international organizations, on projects related to education, science and culture is required. A current relevant position at the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO is required. Experience working with public and private schools in Lebanon is desirable. Experience working with NGOs such as the UN is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in Arabic is required. Knowledge of English and French is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.

Recruitment for this position is on a local basis. The incumbent is required to have the legal right to live and work in the specified working location.
