JOB DESCRIPTION

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

The Engineering Department (EN) pushes back the limits of technology so that physicists can carry out their research. Within the Electrical Engineering (EL) group of the EN department, you will join the section of the Design and Documentation Office (DDO), which is responsible for delivering electrical designs for the group, as well as the database and documentation management of the continuously evolving transmission and distribution networks.

Are you an experienced electrical design engineer, specialized in delivering electrical designs related to AC and DC distribution systems, lighting studies, earthing studies and accustomed to producing cabling schedules?

Then your skills could contribute to the operation, maintenance, consolidation and extension of the complex electrical transmission and distribution network of CERN, dedicated to a unique laboratory hosting some of the world’s most complex technical installations. Join CERN’s Electrical Engineering team. Take part!

Functions

  • Be the lead design engineer for large-scale electrical projects, with design functions including, but not limited to:
    • Low and high voltage distribution networks;
    • Lighting systems for buildings and external areas;
    • DC and UPS distribution systems;
    • Earthing networks.
  • Create and update design drawings using BricsCAD/AutoCAD.
  • Create cabling schedules and installation drawings;
  • Update equipment information into CERN databases;
  • Verify that designs are fully compliant with industry standards, safety rules, quality requirements and general CERN requirements;
  • Provide a permanent support to the Group by updating and improving quality standards.

Qualifications

Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electrical Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

The candidate shall demonstrate expertise in:

  • Leading the design for large electrical projects.
  • Electrical design of HV and LV distribution systems.
  • Short circuit calculations, load flow analysis, design of distribution systems and general electrical circuit design.
  • The design and selection of electrical distribution equipment, such as: switchgear, switchboards, protection relays, transformers, UPS systems, generators, battery chargers and inverters.
  • Supervision of draughtsman and junior engineers.
  • Production of design documents using CAD software (BricsCAD/AutoCAD).
  • EPLAN electric P8 would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Design and modelling of both high-voltage and low-voltage electrical circuits and networks: using BricsCAD, Dialux and Eleccalc (or similar software packages);

Behavioural competencies:

  • Managing Self:
    • Working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting,
    • Taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen;
  • Solving Problems:
    • Assimilating large quantities of information, identifying key issues and formulating conclusions clearly and concisely,
    • Identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them;
  • Achieving Results:
    • Delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations;
  • Working in Teams:
    • Building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships;
  • Communicating Effectively:
    • Listening actively to others and letting others speak.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.
