The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The Knowledge and Risk Unit of the Chemicals and Health Branch promotes scientific approaches and knowledge for the sound management of chemicals including through implementation of UNEA resolutions. The Knowledge and Risk Unit gathers, compiles and analyses state of the art information and data, including through monitoring activities, inventories, and assessments, to allow policymakers to make informed decisions on the sound management of chemicals and waste. The Unit executes projects and covers topics related to lead in paint, persistent organic pollutants, highly hazardous pesticides, chemicals in products, among others. The Unit also addresses issues of concern highlighted by governments, such as antimicrobial resistance, and assists in implementing mandates received through the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) on the GCO-II, sustainable chemistry, and the Sustainable Development Goals. The position is located in the Industry and Economy Division, Chemicals and Health Branch, Knowledge and Risk Unit, at the Geneva duty station. Under the supervision of the Head, Knowledge and Risk Unit, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
Responsibilities
– Research, analyse and presents information gathered from diverse sources and issues related to mercury, plastics and pharmaceuticals. – Undertake survey initiatives; reviews, analyses and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions. – Prepare various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc. – Undertake outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities, with particular emphasis on conveying the priorities established within the programme of work in a clear and objective manner. – Contribute to the development of strategies relating to the technical advisory work of the metals programme, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of impact evaluation or equivalent studies, consideration of innovative approaches and promoting cooperation between relevant organisations etc. – Support the work of the mercury programme with a focus on the coordination, continuous development, implementation and evaluation of the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership; contributes to programme/project development and monitors implementation reviewing relevant documents and reports and identifies problems and issues to be addressed; proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifying and tracking follow-up actions. – Organize and provide substantive backstopping to meetings of the Partnership Advisory Group and other meetings, conferences etc. organised by the unit, including proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations. – Support the workstream on plastics and provide support to the Branch on the development of activities as well as in relation to the legally binding instrument development and implementation. – Develop the Branch’s strategy and intervention on pharmaceuticals including the coordination of any UNEA resolutions on this issue. – Participate in or lead field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc. – Collect and analyse data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. – Perform other duties as required.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in environmental issues, physical sciences (in particular chemistry or biological sciences) or related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project management and programme coordination or chemicals management is required. Experience in implementing environmental programmes or projects including working with pharmaceutical sectors is desirable Experience with UN system, governmental or non-governmental institutions implementing projects/programmes addressing plastic pollution is desirable. 2 years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage. NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
