JOB SUMMARY: CARE is hiring a Senior Press Officer, Humanitarian Affairs for its Media and Communications team to help manage media relations during humanitarian crises. We are looking for someone with an excellent understanding of how global news cycles operate who will garner quality media coverage for CARE at the onset of — and during — humanitarian crises so we can continue to grow our voice, profile, and message-pull through in US and global media. This work includes proactive media engagement as well as managing incoming media inquiries. As part of this role the Senior Press Officer, Humanitarian Affairs will also work alongside colleagues across CARE’s global network to draft press releases, statements and other media content, and ensure that CARE spokespeople are empowered with the necessary training and other resources to confidently represent CARE in media interviews. Reporting to the Director of Media and Communications, the ideal candidate should have a strong background working on a media relations team and a deep appreciation for international affairs. They should also be a strong writer and have a passion for humanitarian work and our mission to end hunger and poverty through a more gender inclusive world. While this position can be remote, preference will be given to candidates based in New York City. Strong preference also given to candidates who have experience working with a humanitarian NGO. French or Arabic speakers are preferred. Media Relations Management Global media relations management — especially strategic and proactive outreach — during humanitarian crises. Specifically target and build relationships with foreign correspondents, breaking news reporters/editors/producers, and news desks, as well as reporters/editors/producers covering issues like conflict, global hunger, climate change, foreign assistance, and gender. Serves as primary point of contact for media during global emergencies. Also fields, vets and manages interview requests, and connects journalists with appropriate information and CARE spokespeople. Additionally, the Senior Press Officer, Humanitarian Affairs manages press briefings and staffs interviews as needed. Messaging and Content Development In collaboration with global colleagues at CARE, develops/drafts, obtains approvals for, and disseminates press releases and statements as needed, often on short notice. This often includes working closely with senior leadership at CARE. Also works with the CARE Creative and Content teams to collect and disseminate stories, visuals, and other content related to global humanitarian crises. Spokesperson Management Identify and support spokespeople — often members of CARE’s senior leadership — and ensure they are prepared for interviews. This includes developing/drafting, obtaining approvals for, and disseminating talking points and briefing packets; as well as managing media trainings/workshops for spokespeople, both on a consistent and ad hoc basis. Occasionally, serve as spokesperson, as needed. Global Crisis Response Management Collaborate with and convene CARE’s global Regional Communications Advisors, key country-level CARE stakeholders, and other communications colleagues who are part of the global CARE network, as needed, to share information and to manage and streamline global media relations strategy and tactics during high profile emergencies. QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in communications, international relations, journalism or other related field. 7 to 9 years of (combined) media relations/communications/public relations/journalism experience. At least 4 years of media relations experience either at an agency or in-house. Knowledge of key U.S. and international media outlets. Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
