The International Energy Agency (IEA) is an intergovernmental organisation with 32 member countries committed to advancing security of energy supply, economic growth and environmental sustainability through energy policy co-operation. The IEA operates as an autonomous body within the framework of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Both the OECD and the IEA seek opportunities to work with an increasing number of non-member countries of growing importance to the world economy. The Agency aims to foster the contribution of the energy sector to economic development and environmental sustainability.

The IEA Communications and Digital Office (CDO) develops and implements the Agency’s communication strategy across its digital platforms. It is responsible for the production and dissemination of IEA data and analysis, oversees the Agency’s digitalisation strategy, public relations and social media.

CDO is looking for a Data Visualisation Designer to support the development of new and innovative content, including data-driven interactive charts, infographics, and videos for the IEA website and social networks. S/he will create data storytelling content, working closely with IEA analysts to make energy data more accessible and easier to understand. The Data Visualisation Designer will have strong data literacy, data-gathering, and programming skills, and a keen interest in energy or other closely related scientific topics.

Job Description

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist with process of designing, developing and updating data-based visuals for IEA publications and the website.
  • Work with IEA teams to come up with compelling visualisations of data and analytical findings.
  • Assist with producing videos, animations, gifs, etc. for use on the website, social channels, and other digital platforms.
  • Research and experiment with new data visualisation tools.
  • Assist with co-ordinating usability tests of data visualisation outputs and suggest improvements.
  • Support graphic design for publications, the website and events as needed.
  • Participate in the OECD Community of practices on data visualisation, to be aware of initiatives and available tools be used for data visualisations.

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Profile

Academic Background

  • Post-secondary education preferably in one or more of the following relevant disciplines such as computer sciences, data sciences, scientific communication, computer science, graphic design, or similar and related fields.

Professional Background

  • At least three years of experience in a scientific, academic, media or research organization, or similar fields.
  • A strong portfolio of projects turning data into insightful visuals.
  • A proven ability to work in a dynamic, international and multi-lingual environment.
  • A demonstrated interest in energy and environmental topics or other relevant fields.

Tools

  • Excellent knowledge of Adobe Illustrator; experience with other Adobe products, especially Photoshop and InDesign, is a major advantage.
  • Strong foundation and design skills in typography and graphic design. Strong knowledge of visualisation princlples such as storytelling with data and chart selection.
  • Experience creating static visualisations, dashboards, and infographics usings Adobe products.
  • Experience creating interactive visualisations using charting libraries such as Highcharts/D3.js is a plus.
  • Experience peforming data analysis and exctracting insights from large data sets using statistical analysis tools.
  • Ability to handle data formats such as CSV and JSON.
  • Knowledge of GIS mapping software is a plus.
  • A good knowledge of HTML and CSS.

Languages

  • An excellent written and oral command of English; working knowledge of French would be an advantage

Contract Duration

  • Two-year fixed term appointment, with the possibility of renewal.

Salary Information

Please note that the appointment may be made at a lower grade based on the qualifications and professional experience of the selected applicant.

Selection Process

For retained candidates, written tests and video-recorded interviews are foreseen approx’ end January and panel interviews are planned to be held approx. mid-late February, 2025.
