Mission and objectives

In Indonesia, UN Women works with government, civil society organizations, academia, the media, the public and private sectors to address national priorities of gender equality and women’s empowerment. Placing the advancement of women’s rights at the centre of our work, UN Women Indonesia focuses on: Ending Violence Against Women UN Women Indonesia works with a range of stakeholders to increase awareness of the causes and consequences of violence against women, while also building the capacity of partners for policy reform to prevent and respond to this violence. We advocate for changing norms and behaviour as a prevention strategy to tackle violence against women. Women, Peace and Security UN Women Indonesia aims to empower women to contribute to better, safer, and more peaceful communities. We promote localized model based on women’s leadership to promote peace and tolerance, strengthening key actors and youth. Women’s Economic Empowerment UN Women Indonesia works with a range of stakeholders, including private sectors, to support women economic empowerment by providing access to skill development, resources and enabling environment to increase women’s participation in the economy.

Context

As the specialized UN Agency on gender equality and the empowerment of women, UN Women in Indonesia is also working alongside other UN Agencies to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming are translated into UN works and programmes to achieve Sustainable Development Goals across the country. UN Women programmes in Indonesia are guided by the Strategy Note 2021-2024, that is aligned with UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) signed between the Minister of National Planning and UN system in the country. In addition to programmatic interventions, UN Women has a triple mandate of normative support, UN coordination, and operational activities. Under the supervision of the Project Coordination Analyst for Peace – Humanitarian Nexus, the UN Volunteer for Community Engagement is expected to provide support to monitor activities to ensure successful project implementation Humanitarian – Development – Peace Nexus.

Task Description

Under the overall guidance of the Programme Manager for Governance, Peace, and Resilience (GPR) and direct supervision of the Project Coordination Analyst for Peace – Humanitarian Nexus, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: 1. Monitor the implementation of KOICA activities conducted by Responsible Parties by referring to the Project Monitoring Framework (PMF); 2. Represent UN Women in the activities conducted by Responsible Parties; 3. Document notes, reports, and other documents related to each activity implemented by the Responsible Parties; 4. Develop articles and human-interest stories about the project in the area of Peace – Humanitarian Nexus; 5. Undertake any tasks assigned by the Project Coordination Analyst for Peace – Humanitarian Nexus. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Living conditions and remarks

The position will be based in one of the following locations: Kupang and Timor Tengah Selatan (East Nusa Tenggara) where basic living needs, including accommodation, banking facilities, and medical facilities are available. All staple foods such as rice, bread, meat, vegetables, fruits, salt, sugar, cooking oil, etc. can be found in the markets, along with basic hygiene products and household supplies, including variety of imported goods. Almost all items can also be ordered for delivery (from grocery to cooked food to household essentials) through various mobile applications. The climate in Kupang, Timor Tengah Selatan, Bima, and Sigi is generally hot and humid, with the Indonesian wet and dry seasons dividing the year in two. Average temperature is The average temperature is slightly below 30°C year-round, with maximum temperatures often exceeding the low 30s°C. The most used means of transportation is taxi. Mobile phone is the most reliable tool to communicate, but the mobile connectivity is limited in certain areas. ATMs can be easily found on streets in the three duty stations and international cards can usually be used to withdraw Indonesian Rupiah. As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.
