What we are looking for:
NRC is seeking an experienced media adviser / media specialist adviser with a strong media nose and an extensive media network. We are looking for someone with excellent English writing skills, who can hit the ground running and deliver on short deadlines.
You will become a part of a very competent and collaborative global media team – and also work extensively with policy, advocacy, media and communications colleagues across the organisation.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone interested in using their media and communications experience to advocate for the rights of people forced to flee.
What you will do:
- The media adviser / media specialist adviser initiates, reviews and distributes strong global media, communications and public advocacy content, including press releases, statements, talking points and opinion pieces
- Uses performance data to improve quality, reach and engagement
- Builds media contacts and the media contact database, and proactively pitches stories to the media
- Provides media and communications surge capacity and remote support for country and regional offices, particularly in emergencies
- Contributes to the development and socialisation of strategies, guidelines, tools and procedures and related training material and to the NRC policy, advocacy, media and comms community of practice
- Takes part in NRC’s system for media and communications standby duty during evenings and weekends
- Is responsible for ensuring NRC-branded media and communication products are of high quality, on-brand, consistently reflect key messaging, and adhere to established guidelines
- Promotes NRC’s global activities and results to support NRC’s private fundraising
- Contributes to timely and efficient collaboration, coordination and information sharing with relevant colleagues, teams and peer organisations, to enable the organisation to influence decision makers, build NRC’s brand and raise funds
- Identifies and train NRC spokespeople
- Provides global support and strategic advice on crisis communication and takes part in Crisis Management Teams – if needed

What you will bring:
- Minimum five years’ work experience as a media and/or communications adviser or journalist – preferably related to development, humanitarian crises and/or foreign affairs.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field, such as journalism or communications. Or bachelor’s degree in other relevant fields such as international relations, development, human rights, combined with proven media experience.
- Fluency in written and verbal English. Other languages are an advantage, especially Norwegian, Swedish, German, Arabic, French and/or Spanish.
- Spokesperson experience, including from live TV and radio interviews is an asset.
- An extensive media network, a strong media nose and the ability to produce and edit proactive and reactive media products such as press releases and opinion pieces in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to find new creative media angles and work cross functionally with staff and teams not familiar with media and communications work.
- Extensive experience and skills within content production and digital communication: photography, videography, drafting of human-interest stories and production of social media content.
- Demonstrated communication and media performance on high strategic levels, including experience with developing and implementing strategic communication plans. Experience in crisis communications.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire and collaborate with colleagues at all levels, both internally and externally, to build a consistent global NRC identity.
What we offer:
- Duty station: Any location with an NRC office in a Central European Time Zone +/- 2 hours, including for example Germany, Belgium, UK, Norway, Jordan, Nairobi, Senegal, or where NRC has employer of record services (Finland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, France, Netherlands and Denmark)
- Contract: 9 months
- Travel: Up to 20%
- Salary/benefits: Grade 8 or 9 on NRC’s International salary scale depending on qualifications, with accompanying terms and conditions
